Americana Hours Classics
We’re gathering under the Americana tent this morning; well, I guess, technically, we do each Friday morning. But this week we’ll spend some time with the classics. I’ll be sharing mid-century highlights from east, west, north and south in a show that pays tribute to some of the classic performers and performances that codified what’s become known as Americana: not a genre, but more of something in the air that makes you comfortable as a well worn blanket but also is the cold breeze that comes in through the cracks. I’ve got the celebratory sounds of The Blasters, Arlo Guthrie, and the NGDB; the painful reminders of days past from The Band, Chris Hillman, and Guy Clark; the harsh reminders of what got us here from Steve Earle, James McMurtry, and Bruce Springsteen. So much more to share in only two hours on Sonoma County Community Radio.
The Great American Songbook
Something different this week. Weāll be reflecting on the Spring Issue of a magazine that cuts through the heart of what we love doing here on both Blue Moon Americana as well as Deeper Roots. There are a handful of publications that make the cut but No Depression magazine is truly special and the Spring 2021 issue is something to revel in. The writing, the artists, and the arc of āThe Great American Songbookā, from Stephen Foster to Louis Armstrong is given thoughtful and insightful treatment. Our show this week puts a soundtrack with a century of Americaās music explored: Dock Boggsā Pretty Polly, George Gershwinās Rhapsody in Blue, The Blue Sky Boysā cover of Knoxville Girl, and some incredible Latin vocals from one Omara Portuondo. The magazine is worth the read and the music is worth a listen. Tune in on a Saturday among the Sonoma County skies for the best of community radio.
The Year 1939
While the clouds of war and fascism were spreading in earnest across Europe, here at home the movies Stagecoach, The Wizard of Oz, and Gone With The Wind premiered and Steinbeck’s Grapes of Wrath was first published. Lou Gehrig bid farewell, A pound of hamburger cost 14 cents and the average price of a new car was $700. And the music was both dance crazy and uplifting, with the music of Tin Pan Alley, Broadway and film dominating. This week’s show will feature the music of 1939 with performances from Crosby, Garland, The Ink Spots, Cab Calloway and Billie Holiday. We’ll also be featuring the jazz and big band sounds of Jimmie Lunceford, Coleman Hawkins, Count Basie, and a handful of others. Deeper Roots sounds from over eight decades past on community radio for Sonoma County coming to you each Friday morning and evening.
Lead Belly’s Legacy
Deeper Roots goes deeper this Friday morning. Weāll be sharing the songs of tradition and folk blues from an artist who opened up a world to a generation of followers in the 1940s and 1950s. With the witting arm of Alan Lomax as his promoter and benefactor, Huddie Ledbetterās music would get wings and find its place in Americaās traditional music lexicon. This weekās show, like last weekās Bill Monroe special, revisits the music that he was identified with, much of which he is credited with bringing into this world, or at least opening our eyes to. Weāll hear from Doug Sahm, Red Smiley, Odetta, The Weavers, Bob Dylan, and many others on a show that celebrates a giant of Americaās songbook. Tune into KOWS radio every Friday morning at 9 Pacific for a new episode of a show thatās heading into itās ninth year here on KOWS Community Radio.
Covering Bill Monroe
The music of Bill Monroe is the theme of our show today. We’ll be featuring some classic tunes from the Monroe catalog including some traditional tunes as well as those written by the master himself. The performers include those from all walks: Ray Charles, Elvis, Doc Watson, Bruce Hornsby, and a collection of bluegrass favorites including Jim & Jessie McReynods, Ricky Skaggs, The Seldom Scene and a couple dozen others; all of them covering Bill Monroe’s music with some loyal to the arrangements while others putting their own spin on it. Begin the Beguine
This past January was as much a month to remember as it was to forget. Weāll keep the serenity we need by softening the blow with music while also celebrating the good with swing, country, rhythm and gospel in another eclectic free form show on Sonoma County community radio. Cold weather and rain arrives so weāll share the soul sounds of William Bell and Johnnie Taylor, some folk rock from Linda Ronstadt, swing vocals from The Mills Brothers and The Four Vagabonds, and gospel with Lou Rawls and the Pilgrim Travelers. Weāll visit Shenandoah, The Red River Valley, and Forty Miles of Bad Road in our Friday morning show, recorded this week in the Deeper Roots Den. I hope youāll join us.
New Orleans R&B
We just canāt get enough of this sound, a blend of sounds that cannot be pushed away with the urban renewal of auto-tune and electronic pasteurization. Itās long history of inspiration whose roots are driven by centuries of influence, from Congo Square to Rampart Street, and beyond. Our show today returns to the humid southern climes at the mouth of the Mississippi for some of the very best of rhythm, from Cosimo Matassaās studios to the clubs that pepper the Crescent City on Bourbon Street. Popular rhythm and blues today from Nawlins inclues some Fats, Professor Longhair, Huey āPianoā Smith, Paul Gayen, Frankie Ford, and a couple dozen others giving us that signature percussive backbeat embellished by pounding piano. Itās a Friday evening celebration here on Sonoma County Community radio.
