Dave Bartholomew passed away in June at the age of 100. You may not know his name, but he was one of the architects of a sound that would become rock n’ roll. A New Orleans fixture he was a band leader, trumpet player, arranger, producer, and songwriter whose keen ear and direction led him to become A&R man for Imperial Records where he met Fats Domino. His songwriting and arrangements can be heard on “Blueberry Hill”, “Ain’t That a Shame”, “Lawdy Miss Clawdy”, and hundreds more. Early rock has the signature of Dave Bartholomew just as the music of New Orleans would become identified with the expansiveness of jazz and rhythm & blues. We’ll hear early influences and early productions of Dave’s, prior to his collaborations with Fats Domino. And, as always, so much more.

We revisit the blues with some pairings of old and new. Join Dave Stroud for a selection of classic delta, Chicago, and folk blues from the likes of Robert Wilkins, Elmore James, Magic Slim, and Bukka White. The original classics pair up with updated versions from contemporaries like Sonny Landreth, Jeff Beck, The Allman Brothers, and Rory Block. Blues is the big muddy and the the tributaries flow through vast expanses of cleansing and clarifying. But, unlike those wide rivers like the Mississippi, the tributaries explode into new, deeper channels in the heart of the American landscape.

Free form provides our weekly exploration a wider berth in which to stretch our wings. And that’s precisely why I take a free form journey every week or so on Deeper Roots. This week we’ll be featuring at least two tracks from the great Ella Mae Morse, some R&B and Doo Wop from The Cardinals and Ruth Brown, a rare track you may never hear elsewhere featuring the late, great Dr. John, and selected tracks from John Prine, Nat King Cole, The Orlons, and a golden classic country favorite from George Jones. We’re just scratching the surface as we sail through two hours of gospel, tradition, pop, rock, country, bluegrass (inhale), blues, and jazz. Don’t miss this week’s Friday stroll on Sonoma County Community Radio.

Look Again to the Wind: Johnny Cash's Bitter Tears Revisited
“The only thing that interests me is history – reviewing the past and making something out of it”. A man after our own heart here at Deeper Roots, shining bright like that old harvest moon. We lost Leon this past week and his family lovingly announced his passing with the following prose deserving of the mysterious Mr. Redbone: “It is with heavy hearts we announce that early this morning, May 30th 2019, Leon Redbone crossed the delta for that beautiful shore at the age of 127. He departed our world with his guitar, his trusty companion Rover, and a simple tip of his hat. He’s interested to see what Blind Blake, Emmett, and Jelly Roll have been up to in his absence.” We’ll take some time to honor the music that so inspired this delightful entertainer who elevated the blues, early century pop, and country into a form that extracted the joy of life and bottled like fine wine over the past 40 years. We’ll even reach into the Redbone bins for a handful of delightful covers. A simple tip of our hat to Leon as he crosses to the other shore…

We’re going to count down the top ten of the year 1954…in pop, country, and R&B. Nothing special about that year, just a random pick; but it was the year that Marilyn Monroe married Joltin’ Joe D. It was the year the Army-McCarthy hearings convened. The words “under God” were added to the Pledge of Allegiance. It was also a year of firsts: That’s Alright, Mama, Elvis’ first big hit, was released on Sun Records, the first Burger King opened, and the first transistor radio was developed and announced by high-tech’s Texas Instruments. The DOW Jones average closed at an all-time high of (a whopping) 382.74. Tune in for the countdown. 65 years in the rear-view on Sonoma County Community Radio.

For the birds, about the birds, and don’t you know that we’ll be wingin’ it on Deeper Roots….literally and figuratively. Our theme this week celebrates these descendants of prehistoric times and we’ll celebrate with flights of music and lyrics by all of the best including stories of robins, blackbirds, bluebirds, mockingbirds, and whipporwills. Tune in for music from LIttle Jimmy Dickens, Buffalo Springfield, Bill Monroe, and The Handsome Family on a Sonoma County Community radio morning that promises the brightest and warmest of the year so far. We’ve got a wild mix this week…sounds from the rock n’ roll archives, all done while excavating deeper into the halls of R&B, rockabilly, and country. Don’t count on the usual suspects, although there will be a few attending, but look to the under-the-radar floor pounders. The performances mostly qualify for shouts, shakes, and rocking fool’s gold, including some hillbilly ranters, New Orleans panters, and country banters. Tune in for some obscure Eddie Cochran alongside sounds from Jimmy Dee & The Offbeats, Sax Kari & His Ballin’ Blues Band, Royce Porter with The Kounts, and the Brewster Avenue Rhythm Boys. We’re Deeper Roots… and we’re going deeper on Friday mornings at 9am Pacific on KOWS 92.5 FM, repeating the following week on KWTF 88.1 FM. Check us out!

Founded in 1957 by brother and sister Jim Stewart and Estelle Axton as Satellite Records, Stax Records would become a powerhouse soul and R&B label in the sixties. Their ‘open door’ policy of welcoming artists to prove themselves in the studio produced an unparalleled cadre of talent. Although it looked as if the label went down with its biggest talent, Otis Redding, in 1967 when Atlantic Records had Stax forfeit all of its studio recordings through its power of majority stakeholder, under the guiding hand of Al Bell, the catalogue was rebuilt and a whole new generation of performers would surface in the 1970s. We’ll share the stories and the music from the Stax label this Friday on Deeper Roots on Sonoma County’s powerhouse low power station, KOWS.

Music this week that speaks to hard times. From the Dust Bowl and Great Depression to personal hardships, we’ll share some bluegrass sounds, tunes steeped in tradition, soothing notes of country gospel, and folk blues. We’ll hear from The Weavers, Mavis Staples, Bobby Bare, and Pearly “Grandma” Davis (a nugget from Mike Seeger’s Old Time Music series). There will be talk of failing crops, revolution, and Oklahoma dust this week. Deeper Roots goes a little bit deeper with more songs about hard times this week on KOWS Community Radio, broadcasting live from the Cherry Street Historic District of Santa Rosa, California, where our neighbors just experienced their own hard times from flood waters. Thinking about them.
