The landscape this morning is smothered in ominous clouds as the music we have for you features the gospel beat with a blend of suggestive celebratory, suspicious, and devil-may-care songs. We’ve got the fire and brimstone bible-thumping sounds of Brother Claude Ely, some classic gospel warnings from The Golden Gate Quartet, a pastiche of British Clerkenwell nuggets from The Real Tuesday Weld, The Weavers, Lonnie Johnson, and a whole lot more. An eclectic blend of songs of Satan, dark nights, and sinner’s bemoaning their dirty little religion on another Friday morning collection of sounds on Deeper Roots. Tune in. The ground is saturated with blues, gospel, country, and even some hillbillies from hell…just for you.

Elvis Presley’s performances, in particular those from his first decade, were based in some very deep roots. Those roots tapped into almost anything that could be heard in the south on that cultural touchstone of radio. Blues, big band, jazz, hillbilly, pop, gospel and country all played an enormous role in molding the iconic performer he was to become. In our Deeper Roots show this week we’ll be exploring the ‘influencers’ of the day; songs that played on the radio, songs that Elvis personally revealed as his favorites, songs that he enjoyed with his family as a young boy. We’ve got Mahalia and Sister Rosetta tracks, Little Junior Parker and Jimmy Reed, Red Foley and Roy Acuff, and a host of others to share this week so we’re hoping that we can remember how radio’s lifeline to culture that spoke to Elvis in a very, very big way.

Bob Dylan Presents: Radio Radio, Theme Time Radio Hour, Vol. 1
A mixed bag of the soulful sounds with an undercurrent of gospel mixed in this morning. Songs whose construction bears some resemblance or, in most cases, far distant ancestry to the sacred sounds of the church gatherings. The music this morning isn’t really gospel in its obvious form. It’s more the sound of performances that owe gospel music a debt of gratitude for the sound, the rhythm, and the form. Tune in for a bright, shining blend of popular sounds from Paul Simon, Laura Nyro, Curtis Mayfield, Percy Sledge, Mitty Collier, and a couple dozen others as we take a closer walk with rhythm, soul, rock, and pop on a Friday morning in Sonoma County on KOWS, your low power community station with a big heart. Tune in on 92.5 FM or stream us on kowsfm.com/listen.

There’s no telling where this week’s show could lead because we’ve got the musical evangelists, pentacostals, and Baptists right alongside those charming bluesmen and rock and rollers to turn up the heat. We’ve got a burning revival of rockabilly, rhythm and blues, and God-fearing country and hillbilly sounds to take us into the weekend. Hooligans and bible-thumping holy rollers are pushing their way through the doors today and we’re here to tell you that we’re not gonna take anyone telling he or she what they can do with their bodies. Today’s performers will feature Sister Rosetta, Brother Claude, The Louvins, Hank Jr., Moon Mullican, and Jerry Lee Lewis…and that’s just a taste. Join us on Sonoma County Community Radio.

In an encore episode from 2015, we listen in as Dave explores the multi-generational sounds of not only bluegrass with Dillard and Clark and The Hackberry Ramblers, but we’ll also cross the genres (as we are wont to do) with Cowboy Copas, Clara Ward, Otis Spann, and Doris Day. There’s a couple of different threads that run through the show today, one being that of the ‘devil’ and the other being of ‘new mornings’. Tune in at a special time and see what’s in store on a late-fall morning in West County. And please, donate to community radio: kwtf.net.

Warming By The Devils Fire – A Film By Charles Burnett
Sinners, singing and swinging is the theme we’re bringing you as we approach the dog days of summer in yet another season of COVID. In a show refactored for these new and dangerous times we raise the level of the gospel message with influential performers from the past century like Blind Willie Johnson, Lonnie Johnson, The Louvin Brothers, and some contemporary interpretations to remind us that Jesus did, indeed, rock the jukebox with a steady roll. Gospel’s rhythm is the rhythm of rock ‘n roll but these songs also carry a message for all you sinners out there. Don’t let the devil ride the devil’s slide into Satan’s burning hell…all songs with a pressing message and a sense of sermon. You can tune us in Friday evenings on 92.5 FM in Sonoma County or streaming to the world at kowsfm.com.

The Essential Tony Bennett [Columbia/Legacy] Disc 1
There are no more essential metaphors to be had in the American story than that of the river. The river is nature’s alliance with mankind and its muse in prose, poetry and song. It is the stuff of dreams, the movement of the clock in Her terms, the news of the day when the banks are breached, and the symbol of biblical ventures of time and home. So we’ll be taking to the river on a Friday in July to feel the warmth of the surface knowing full well that the undercurrent is treacherous and cold beneath the hull. Music this week includes the stories of the Great Flood of 1927 with Barbecue Bob, the baptismal elements from Alison Krauss and Irma Thomas, Central Valley memories from Dave Alvin by way of Merle Haggard, and the poetry of river sounding chants and Paul Robeson’s muscle. Tune in as we drift our way down the Mississippi and beyond on Friday morning on Deeper Roots.

This week’s show celebrates the Godmother of rock ‘n roll who was finally paid tribute with her 2018 induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Sister Rosetta Tharpe’s sanctified electric guitar work not only touched on the cusp of soul and blues, but it foretold what was to come less than a decade later. There were the R&B bands, which she would dabble in (much to the chagrin of her followers), that would also have an impact…but it was her sound that influenced and inspired Elvis, Wanda Jackson, Jerry Lee Lewis, and so many others, even to this day. We’ll take a deep dive into the music and story of this legend including some of those who she would draw her own inspirations from. Tune in.
