Some dynamite gospel this week that leans heavily on the influencers, but we won’t let that lock us in. We’ll be cutting a broad swath across the Americana landscape, with deeper gospel tracks from some of the greats like the Selah Jubilee Singers, the rollicking Reverend Robert Ballinger, The Bronzeman, and some other greats you may or may not know. But we’ll also share tracks from the next generation secular branding with just a taste of gospel in their music: Johnny Taylor, Edwin Hawkins, and Curtis Mayfield. We’ll also share a couple of Marty Stuart gospel tracks in another look at the deepest roots from the past century. So grab the headphones and get ready for a revival without beating you about the head with any false fundamentalism. All for our favorite listeners, beaming down from the ether on KOWS Community Radio.

This May Be My Last Time Singing: Raw African-American Gospel on 45RPM, 1957-1982
There’s hardly a branch or root extension of American music that is not somehow connected the gospel. The themes of love, betrayal, birth, death, and the soul’s redemption have all long been played out repeatedly in the pulpit each and every Sunday. Thoughts and prayers are easily spent when the hard work isn’t as palpable to deal with. This week’s show blends the gospel of the Baptist, Pentacostal and Church of Christ as they were the big leader of the rafter shakers on the way to “Beulah Land” with a little bit of swing and country favorites. Tune in for music that runs the gospel gamut from the Soul Satisfiers of Philadelphia and the Gospel Songbirds to Sister Oda Mae Terrell and the country pairings of the Chuck Wagon Gang, Mac Wiseman, Kitty Wells, and of course, Johnny Cash and Willie Nelson. Deeper Roots revisits some gospel classics in another Friday morning blend of the past 100 years of America’s music. Here on KOWS Community Radio. Free Speech. No Bull.

Wasn't That A Time – Disc 2 – This Land Is Your Land
We go back to the church for a rousing celebration for the converted and soon-to-be-faithful. That’s right, we’re in the pews and joining in the hymnal, at least for this two hours, as Sunday morning forgiveness will always follow Saturday night’s sinner’s baptismal. We’re going to hear the echoes of the past century’s gospel songs with a general theme of being saved and born again…and there is certainly plenty to go around whether that’s southern Baptist, Appalachian harmonies or classic African American celebratory gospel. We’ve got it this morning including The Dixie Hummingbirds, Hank Williams, Carl Story, Lonnie Farris, and some contemporary selections from Shannon McNally, Bob Dylan and Solomon Burke. Let’s join in, you the faithful congregation of Deeper Roots from the past century of America’s music, for two hours celebrating that incredible wellspring of gospel sounds.

God Don't Never Change: The Songs Of Blind Willie Johnson
This week’s show celebrates the Godmother of rock ‘n roll who was finally paid tribute with her 2018 induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Sister Rosetta Tharpe’s sanctified electric guitar work not only touched on the cusp of soul and blues, but it foretold what was to come less than a decade later. There were the R&B bands, which she would dabble in (much to the chagrin of her followers), that would also have an impact…but it was her sound that influenced and inspired Elvis, Wanda Jackson, Jerry Lee Lewis, and so many others, even to this day. We’ll take a deep dive into the music and story of this legend including some of those who she would draw her own inspirations from. Tune in.

Sister Rosetta Tharpe and the Spirit of Gospel (Vol. 4)
On this most relevant of days, we’ll be digging through some of the important songs from the past century focusing on its meaning and significance. While the embodiment of the music could have touched on every genre because the influences are vast, we’ll settle on the inspirational sounds from every corner. Juneteenth is a jubilant, high energy celebration of a somber reality. First recognized in 1865 it is the oldest known celebration honoring the end of slavery in the United States. On June 19, 1865, Union General Gordon Granger led thousands of federal troops to Galveston, Texas to announce that the Civil War had ended, and slaves had been freed. Our observation on Deeper Roots includes tracks from Marvin Gaye, Bill Withers, and gospel sounds galore leading off with Mahalia Jackson.

From the hills of Appalachia to the urban church pews of the East, North, South, and West…we’ve got camp meeting celebrations, old time religion, with biblical strains where voices raised above the fray brought solace to the masses. And speaking of voices, tune in for some of the very best gospel spanning bluegrass, tradition, soul, and black gospel from heaven’s radio. The Davis Sisters, The Blind Boys of Alabama, Aretha, The Blue Sky Boys, and Ralph Stanley are on the docket alongside The Carter Family, John Fogerty and Willie and Bobbie Nelson. Some brand new Americana surfaces to keep the kettle warm in the kitchen…Friday mornings with a dash of Billy Sunday’s crowd gatherings. It’s a Sunday meeting on a Friday morning here on Sonoma County Community Radio.

Another gospel celebration, this time with a mix of country, bluegrass, classic black gospel, and a very special blending from the annals of rock n’ roll. We’re calling this roots celebration “Gospel Cross-Currents” and it makes its way through a mix of fifties country gospel of Fern Jones and Bonnie Owens and some recent country releases of Marty Stuart and His Fabulous Superlatives with folk, bluegrass and black gospel of the early century. Tune in for Mac Wiseman, Mahalia Jackson, Elvis, the Alphabetical Four, and Sister Lottie Peavy. Deeper Roots celebrates each Friday morning on KOWS and Friday evening on KWTF.

Great Gospel Performers: Complete Recording Sessions in Chronological Order, 1937-1950
We had so much fun with our first installment a few months back that we thought it was worth a second installment…well, that and the depth and breadth of the American Songbag certainly lends itself to doing so. It doesn’t hurt either that it fits our deeper roots sensibilities so well. This installment finds us meandering about those classic songs whose topics include mellow blues ballads, hobo songs, Mexican border songs (how appropriate), tarnished love tales, and the ‘road to heaven’. Helping us through our sets we’ll be featuring an interesting collection of performers: Dave Van Ronk, Dock Boggs, Rosanne Cash, and Peter Case. A host of others will join in the fun on Community Radio for Sonoma County.

Seeds – The Songs Of Pete Seeger, Vol. 3 (Disc 2 Of 2 – Friends Of Pete)
Deeper Roots goes to the deeper wells of black American gospel which is one of the more powerful examples of bedrock sounds that we play here on our show. This show includes hand-picked classics such as “The Old Rugged Cross”, “Joshua Fit the Battle”, “Trouble in My Way”, and a medley of freedom classics from the SNCC Freedom Singers. It’s a mix of jubilee quartets, female gospel greats, sensational musical sermons, as well as Aretha, Sister Tharpe, Mahalia, and The Staples. Tune in for more….a whole lot more.
