Rock Bop & Roll

We’ve got a wild mix this week…sounds from the rock n’ roll archives, all done while excavating deeper into the halls of R&B, rockabilly, and country. Don’t count on the usual suspects, although there will be a few attending, but look to the under-the-radar floor pounders. The performances mostly qualify for shouts, shakes, and rocking fool’s gold, including some hillbilly ranters, New Orleans panters, and country banters. Tune in for some obscure Eddie Cochran alongside sounds from Jimmy Dee & The Offbeats, Sax Kari & His Ballin’ Blues Band, Royce Porter with The Kounts, and the Brewster Avenue Rhythm Boys. We’re Deeper Roots… and we’re going deeper on Friday mornings at 9am Pacific on KOWS 92.5 FM, repeating the following week on KWTF 88.1 FM. Check us out!

8 Songwriters 3 Hours

A special three hour show has Dave filling in for KC and I Hear You Rockin’ on KOWS Community Radio, live from the KOWS studios in the Cherry Street Historic District of Santa Rosa. Dave will walk through some of performances of songwriters who were influential in the rise of Americana sounds including blues, rock, rhythm & blues, pop, folk, and country in the late half of the 20th century. Who you might ask? In addition to the pairings of Carole King and Gerry Goffin as well as Fats Domino and Dave Bartholomew, we’ll also be sharing songs written by Bob Dylan, Robert Johnson, Dolly Parton, Willie Nelson, Hank Williams, and Tom Waits.

Who We Lost 2018

We’ll circle back to the past twelve months on Deeper Roots’ Friday evening with a little bit of reverence and a whole lot of thanks.  While this past year struck what could be a mortal blow to democracy as we know it, a number of greats (both high profile and ‘under the radar’) were lost along the way.  The names may not be so easy to collate with only two hours to share but we’ll do our best. Remembering Clarence Fountain, Eddy Clearwater, Otis Rush, Eugene Pitt, Marty Balin, Lorrie Collins, Tony Joe White, Roy Clark, and so many others on a Friday evening on  Sonoma County community radio. Tune into our last show of the year and help us remember what these performers brought us.

Louisiana Gumbo

Back to the bayou. Back to Bourbon Street. From a house of blues to the small clubs out across the river. We’ll be taking a journey into the deeper wells where the influences include urban blues, jazz, French Acadian, Caribbean, and African American.  And one could argue a handful of others. It’s all there in the sounds of south where the pianos and guitar amps are wired into a foundation of tradition…as if performed from a garage or cabin. Cookie & The Cupcakes’ swamp pop, swamp rock from Randy & The Rockets, New Orleans busking from Snooks Eaglin, classic piano noodling from the Professor and Dr. John, and a warm bouillabaisse of southern musical cuisine from Dave Bartholomew and Fats Domino all served up on a Friday evening celebrating a few of the treats on community radio for Sonoma County, KOWS.

Answer Songs

Answer songs. A novelty of the music business that has always had a place but it truly exploded, becoming habit-forming with the advent of Top 30 radio in the fifties and sixties. Seldom was there an answer song that responded to a question that was not a big success. This week on Deeper Roots, it will be a ’round robin’ of ‘question followed by answer’ songs including the obscure (which about 99% of the so-called answer songs were). You’ll be treated to the sounds of Tennessee Ernie Ford, Muddy Waters, Rufus Thomas, Dodie Stevens, and Elvis (of course) on a summer Friday in West Sonoma County.

Political Science

The winds of social change become the storm from every direction when authoritarianism, tyranny, and facism begin to take shape. And music has always played a part when speaking truth to power. The most important role of an American citizen is to vote. There is no greater enemy than apathy. The songs we share on Deeper Roots today focus on Civil Rights, war for the cause of oil, voting as voice, and the fight for power in the New World Order. Tune in for performances from Phil Ochs, Ben Harper, Drive-By Truckers, Roy Zimmerman, and Iris DeMent on a show that explores some political science in harmony, vocals, and melodies to make a stand.

Dylan & The Gospel

The argument has been made that Bob Dylan’s earliest music contained more prophetic prose than his deep dive into the Christian faith in Slow Train Coming. His pen had always leaned on the big story lines of Old and New Testaments but he went all out, much as he did in his ‘rock’ conversion, when he made the direct connection to matters of the soul that he would find in the Bible. This week’s show features the gospel songs of Bob Dylan, performed by gospel greats The Dixie Hummingbirds, The Fairfield Four, The Mighty Clouds of Joy, and so many others. Tune into Sonoma County Community radio for a Dylan gospel fest including Maria Muldaur and Willie Nile.

Superstition

Superstition and luck are the topics for our theme show on a Friday night in Sonoma County on community radio. Deeper Roots explores those superstitious topics of charms, clovers, black cats, and numerology this week.  Join Dave Stroud for blues from the Wolf, Lucille Bogan, and Albert King; county star power from Skeets McDonald, Ernest Tubb, and Elvis; plus a lot of special treats including tracks from Bill Wyman’s Rhythm Kings, Casey Bill Weldon, Joe Barry, and Larry Campbell. We’ll also be wishing on star power from Cliff Edwards and Petra Haden…and four leaf clover luck from Nick Lucas, Bill Haley, and Al Miller. From the turn of the century to a couple of contemporary sounds.

Rockin’ Rhythm & Gospel

We gravitate towards gospel because it’s roots are so entwined with virtually every form of music we feature on Deeper Roots; so we’ll revisit the sound once more. However, in this episode we’ll focus on the rock and rhythm inspiration…gospel performances that were more worldliness than holiness. Jesus Rocked The Jukebox is the name of an album that we’ve leaned on in this episode and expanded from there with examples of over-the-top performances in the key of the sacred but with the pounding rhythmic syncopation of the secular. Join Dave Stroud as he pulls out the stop with the likes of The Dixie Hummingbirds, The Detroiters, The Highway QCs, Fannie Bell Chapman, and a host of others. Breathtaking gospel for a Friday evening in Sonoma County.
