Seven years after our community was ravaged by three different wildfires, we’re going to focus on the theme of rain in our show today. Call it a rain dance if you must but we’re hoping that not only will the weather give us one more year of respite from the flaming torrent of climate change-induced wildfires but also make it two years in a row with reservoir replenishment. So why not a theme that promotes rainy weather? We’ll go to every genre corner in the show today: gospel, jazz, country, rock ‘n roll, soul and rhythm & blues. Tune in for a themed collection this morning that includes the likes of Glenn Yarbrough, Percy Sledge, Leon Russell, Lonnie Johnson and Billy “The Kid” Emerson. There’s a whole lot more so join in and find out. A sunny September morning leads us to our rain dance…or whatever you call it.

Some dynamite gospel this week that leans heavily on the influencers, but we won’t let that lock us in. We’ll be cutting a broad swath across the Americana landscape, with deeper gospel tracks from some of the greats like the Selah Jubilee Singers, the rollicking Reverend Robert Ballinger, The Bronzeman, and some other greats you may or may not know. But we’ll also share tracks from the next generation secular branding with just a taste of gospel in their music: Johnny Taylor, Edwin Hawkins, and Curtis Mayfield. We’ll also share a couple of Marty Stuart gospel tracks in another look at the deepest roots from the past century. So grab the headphones and get ready for a revival without beating you about the head with any false fundamentalism. All for our favorite listeners, beaming down from the ether on KOWS Community Radio.

This May Be My Last Time Singing: Raw African-American Gospel on 45RPM, 1957-1982
There’s hardly a branch or root extension of American music that is not somehow connected the gospel. The themes of love, betrayal, birth, death, and the soul’s redemption have all long been played out repeatedly in the pulpit each and every Sunday. Thoughts and prayers are easily spent when the hard work isn’t as palpable to deal with. This week’s show blends the gospel of the Baptist, Pentacostal and Church of Christ as they were the big leader of the rafter shakers on the way to “Beulah Land” with a little bit of swing and country favorites. Tune in for music that runs the gospel gamut from the Soul Satisfiers of Philadelphia and the Gospel Songbirds to Sister Oda Mae Terrell and the country pairings of the Chuck Wagon Gang, Mac Wiseman, Kitty Wells, and of course, Johnny Cash and Willie Nelson. Deeper Roots revisits some gospel classics in another Friday morning blend of the past 100 years of America’s music. Here on KOWS Community Radio. Free Speech. No Bull.

Wasn't That A Time – Disc 2 – This Land Is Your Land
There’s going to be a free form mix of sounds this week with some ‘scenes of devastation’ as well as some blues and tradition. We’ll set the tone with a song that inspired the title lines from The Pine Hill Project and then head into some tradition and some covers that speak in the language of the sacred and secular…from Saturday night at the juke to Sunday morning in the pew. A great mix of sounds from some classic female blues gems from the 1940s like Wea Bea Booze and Ethel Waters. We’ll also go down to the crossroads and Deep Elem with the likes of Champion Jack Dupree and T-Bone Walker, some deeper/darker blues from Geeshie Wiley and Blind Lemon Jefferson as well. But we’ll also fill the air with the tops in great interpretations from Van Dyke Parks, Willie Watson and Bob Brozman. Join us for some ‘last kind words’ from the Rocky Road Blues to James Alley on a Friday morning in West County.

It’s theme time on a Friday morning in Sonoma County on Deeper Roots and we’ll take you pretty deep today, exploring songs of jubilation and celebration. Our theme revolves around the term ‘jubilee’ and it’s meaning, at least over the past century. While its etymology is centuries deep, with roots in the Old Testament and the Hebrew word ‘yobhel’ which refers to the ram’s horn which was sounded on the Day of Atonement, there are also the jubilee references to the freeing of slaves well into the 19th century. it speaks to anniversaries, rejoicing, and freedom. We could go much deeper but what better way to celebrate than with music, and there are plenty of Americana examples that tell of jubilees. We’ll hear from country favorites like The Sons of the Pioneers, Tyler Childers, and Joe Maphis alongside early century rhythm jazz and rhythm greats like Dinah Washington, Ivie Anderson, and Benny Goodman in this week’s show. From the cold grey light of dawn to some gospel coverage from Luther Dickinson, George Jones and The Golden Gate Quartet, Deeper Roots this week takes another pull at the thread of tapestry of the past century, once again celebrating America’s music. We’re in fine form, no doubt, because the players this week move from the ‘king of boogie’, John Lee Hooker, to one of the great contemporary songwriters, Iris DeMent. We’ll share a track from her latest album, one that ventures into the dark corners of this country’s recent history with her brilliant eight minute soliloquy “Goin’ Down To Sing In Texas”. We’ll share songs about liars, feeling good, 99 year blues, and that last train to Memphis. Join Dave Stroud for two hours from America’s songbooks, from church to steeple to songs about its people. We’ll be coming to you live from the Cherry Street Historic District of Santa Rosa, California.

We go back to the church for a rousing celebration for the converted and soon-to-be-faithful. That’s right, we’re in the pews and joining in the hymnal, at least for this two hours, as Sunday morning forgiveness will always follow Saturday night’s sinner’s baptismal. We’re going to hear the echoes of the past century’s gospel songs with a general theme of being saved and born again…and there is certainly plenty to go around whether that’s southern Baptist, Appalachian harmonies or classic African American celebratory gospel. We’ve got it this morning including The Dixie Hummingbirds, Hank Williams, Carl Story, Lonnie Farris, and some contemporary selections from Shannon McNally, Bob Dylan and Solomon Burke. Let’s join in, you the faithful congregation of Deeper Roots from the past century of America’s music, for two hours celebrating that incredible wellspring of gospel sounds.

The Great Gospel Men: 27 Classic Performances By The Greatest Gospel Men
A theme show once again, this week with the telephone as our muse. Songs about the most important of communication devices which has fused with social media to the benefit, and equal detriment, of all mankind. From the early call from Bell to Watson to the proverbial football that our fearless leader carries around to make the one call to eradicate or, better yet, save mankind. This week we’ll visit the long lost guide known as the “operator” and the equally antiquated term “dial” with music from country, pop, soul, and rock archives of yesterday. Kick back and be entertained by the sounds of Brenda Lee, Sister Wynona Carr, Stonewall Jackson, Loretta Lynn & Ernest Tubb, and Bill Fury in a collection of the very best from multiple genres here on Sonoma County Community Radio, broadcasting in West County on 92.5 FM and streaming to all mankind on kowsfm.com/listen. Drop in why don’t you?

The landscape this morning is smothered in ominous clouds as the music we have for you features the gospel beat with a blend of suggestive celebratory, suspicious, and devil-may-care songs. We’ve got the fire and brimstone bible-thumping sounds of Brother Claude Ely, some classic gospel warnings from The Golden Gate Quartet, a pastiche of British Clerkenwell nuggets from The Real Tuesday Weld, The Weavers, Lonnie Johnson, and a whole lot more. An eclectic blend of songs of Satan, dark nights, and sinner’s bemoaning their dirty little religion on another Friday morning collection of sounds on Deeper Roots. Tune in. The ground is saturated with blues, gospel, country, and even some hillbillies from hell…just for you.

Elvis Presley’s performances, in particular those from his first decade, were based in some very deep roots. Those roots tapped into almost anything that could be heard in the south on that cultural touchstone of radio. Blues, big band, jazz, hillbilly, pop, gospel and country all played an enormous role in molding the iconic performer he was to become. In our Deeper Roots show this week we’ll be exploring the ‘influencers’ of the day; songs that played on the radio, songs that Elvis personally revealed as his favorites, songs that he enjoyed with his family as a young boy. We’ve got Mahalia and Sister Rosetta tracks, Little Junior Parker and Jimmy Reed, Red Foley and Roy Acuff, and a host of others to share this week so we’re hoping that we can remember how radio’s lifeline to culture that spoke to Elvis in a very, very big way.
