We’ve waited four years so there’s no need for any more hopes, prayers, or incantations. Our way of American life is on the line. The choice is ours. As our image says: “Vote as you please, but please vote.” We’re kicking off the five day countdown with a collection of music featuring political songs, songs about voting, democracy, freedom, and civil rights; ; all of which are currently threatened by this administration and its sycophants, traitors, and rats. We’ll hear from Steve Goodman, Sweet Honey in the Rock, Bob Dylan, The New Christy Minstrels, and (of course) Roy Zimmerman, all of whom touch on one or more of our topics of the day. We’ve got free speech, no bull radio here in Sonoma County and Deeper Roots will take this Friday out to use a bullhorn to ask that you go out and vote, for heaven’s (and democracy’s) sake. We need to turn this ship around and this is our best opportunity.

Free Form Friday is considered the calm before two upcoming events, both suspenseful in nature. Halloween and Election Day. Halloween because we’ll be sharing some of the haunted reminders as well as social distancing, whereas Election Day will send the right message and send the ghouls, rats, and seditionists scurrying back to their nests. This morning’s music is the bright reminder that good still can come of our situation, taking a time out for music that keeps us centered. We’ll make the leap from Mama Cass to Geraint Watkins, Ella to Laura Nyro, John Prine to The Beach Boys…all in perfect form. Join Dave Stroud for another celebration of a hundred years of America’s music on KOWS radio, a bastion of free speech and no bull, streaming to your ears on www.freespeechnobull.com. And donate to support community radio.

Six months later…’nuff said, right? Deeper Roots finally gets around to the theme of pandemic protection by staying at home until things stabilize. We were all put out when it looked like six weeks and here we are talking months, not weeks. Patience and commitment. Something we have to work on. But we’ve got music to comfort us. Our heritage is rich with an incredible catalog of works; from country classics to the raw country blues, soul from Motor City and the Eastern Seaboard, jazz from New Orleans and KC, and everything in between. Just look (or listen) back. This week’s Deeper Roots features songs about keeping safe in shelter with fresh sounds from the digital bins. Warren Zevon, Jim Reeves, Wynonie Harris, The Alphabetical Four, Kitty Wells, and Buddy Miller will be featured. No need to put on your helmets (or tin foil hats) or to duck and cover. But you might want to get out the vote!

Today’s Deeper Roots show explores the Document label once more but, this time, we’ll be asking Gary and Gillian to tell us more. They’ll share some personal anecdotes about what brought them to their life’s work. So many of us from the baby boomer generation discovered early roots music through covers by bands from our early years that led us to recurring moments of musical revelation. And many of us found ourselves digging, rummaging, exploring, collecting, and listening for those mother lodes of musical treasures that surfaced like bits of gold on that river of time that runs from ‘then’ to the ‘now’. It’s the second part of our interview with this delightful couple from across the pond. Hear their stories of connecting with this music and how it informed their life’s work with Document Records.

Authoritarianism right in our own backyard. What are the signs that we should concern ourselves with? Much has been revealed over the centuries of how power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely. While our so-called checks and balances lay down in fear in the face of fascism and the childish fear of being made fun of by the playground bully, the innocents are called terrorists and the terrorists, patriots. Up is down and down is up, right? Music’s been made of the human condition over time and there’s also been books and countless political speeches…and we’re going to take our time today to share the music and speak of the ballot box which is our only weapon, it seems, in a democracy. When cowards and sycophants led by the GOP and Fox News pretend patriotism, we know we’re in trouble and we know that the hard rainis falling. Federal troops areattacking mothers, veterans, and peaceful protesters with impunity and there are no checks. There is nobalance. As songwriter R. B. Morris observes, that’s how every empire falls…and you can tune in for inspiration as the August march on Washington is just around the corner.

The Beginning Of The End – The Existential Psychodrama In Country Music (1956-1972)
Free Form Friday finds us filling the airwaves with soul, border music, a dose of gospel, blues, and so much more. Join Dave Stroud this week on Deeper Roots as he brings you the stories and the sounds from the past century. As we go into our sixth month of pandemic isolation, we reflect on those lost and those suffering knowing full well that this virus could have been shunted by responsible adults. But we’re confronted with complete and utter idiocy at the highest (and lowest) locales: those who politicize and those pouty little man- and woman-babies who refuse to wear masks. We’ll look past this for two hours as we share soul sounds from James Carr and Bobby Womack, folk-rock anthems from Bob Dylan and John Sebastian, as well as good news gospel from Marion Williams and Sam Cooke. We’ll also go with a tribute to Texas where the suffering is reaching heights unimagined only a few months ago as they continue to suffer from failed leadership. Tune in on Fridays at 9 Pacific.

While the Cheetoh-in-chief comes up with hateful and pitiful distraction after distraction in an attempt to have us take our eyes off of failure after profound failure of his…we celebrate the folks in gray and blue who not only bring us the bills but also the packages, ballots, and cheer from friends and relatives. That little white truck is more than an institution: it is part of our collective heritage and a constant that should be cherished. It’s been celebrated in music from every corner over the past century and we’re scouring those dusty digital bins for country, blues, rock, and rhythm that are burnished with the colors of the letter carrier in word and rhyme. Tune in for everyone from Roy Rogers to Memphis Slim, Smiley Lewis, and Tiny Bradshaw this week. Sonoma County Community Radio goes deep on another pandemic Friday morning.

Bob Dylan Presents: Radio Radio, Theme Time Radio Hour, Vol. 3
Dark days with the devil. Self-centered, morally lacking, and incapable of empathizing with human kind. Sound like someone you know? This morning’s show finds us down in the hole where Satan never sleeps and where darkness pervades. There’s a very wide range of topics in our show, including the harnessing of the atom, the soul of man, and the valley where Jordan slices across the heart. Hillbillies from hell, a trip to St. James Infirmary, the lion’s den, and the belly of the whale are all to be seen with tracks from Brother Claude, the Jordan River Boys, The Doors, El Radio Fantastique, and Otis Spann in a show that is certain to have you taking stock of yesterday, today, and tomorrow as we make this social distancing a not-so-transient fixture in our lives. Balance this theme against the sun shining bright on a Spring morning in Sonoma County.

Hillbillies In Hell – Country Music's Tormented Testament (1952-1974) The Final Chapter
In our Friday morning episode, we’re revisiting the traditional form of the murder ballad and we’ll also take some liberties with some more modern takes from the likes of Tom Waits, Gillian Welch, and Nick Cave. In the traditional form we’ll measure centuries-old cultural aberrations with the stories of gamblers, ramblers, and murdering misogynists that peppered the landscapes of country gospel, Appalachian folk, and urban alleyways. Frankie, Johnny, Stack-O-Lee, William Zanzinger, and Ellen Smith are just a few of the players in today’s show. Join Dave Stroud for a journey through tradition this Friday evening on Community Radio for Sonoma County.

20th Century Masters: The Millennium Collection – Best Of Bluegrass
A while back we explored road songs in the genres of blues and tradition. This week’s show complements the theme with a country flavor. Songs of the lonesome road, the lost highway, the wrong highway taken, as well as hitting the road with those classic country kings of the road and highway queens. We’ll hear some early Waylon Jennings, bluegrass from Bill Monroe, trucker laments from Red Simpson, and a tribute to the Carters on the Road to Kaintuck. We’ve battened down the hatches, closed shop, and are practicing social distancing as if our lives (and those of our neighbors) depended on it. Join Dave Stroud on a KWTF Friday evening remote production of Deeper Roots.
