Mark Hogan’s in Grass Valley this week gearing up for the 41st Annual Father’s Day Bluegrass Festival which opens this coming Thursday, June 16th. Dave Stroud will be sitting in for Mark and will feature new releases, old standards, and vintage country sounds from the likes of Doug Sahm, Chris Smither, The Hackensaw Boys, and Emmylou Harris & The Nash Ramblers….not to mention a good helping of Bill Monroe recordings from 1960.
Not only was Merle Haggard an accomplished country performer but he was also one of the more prolific songwriters of the past century whose songs were aimed at the heart of ‘everyman’. In losing Merle Haggard, America lost a neighbor, the guy next door who was there when you needed him. We’ll share a number of sets of Merle’s music: some performed by Merle, others performed by contemporaries including George Jones, Emmylou Harris, and Charlie Louvin. We’ll also feature a number of duets including performances by Merle with Jimmie Davis, Marty Stuart, and Willie Nelson.

I’ll say…finger pickin’ good music featuring finger pickin’ great performers from the past century. We’ve got a two hour sampling of sounds from the likes of Doc Watson, Jorma Kaukonen, Chet Atkins, Tommy Emmanuel, Blind Blake, Riley Puckett, and (of course) Merle Travis. Our Wednesday evening will keep it pretty folksy and traditional for the most part, leaning on tradition and the very best in string picking and chord strumming. All this and more on our roots music show which is produced exclusively for Sonoma County community radio, both KWTF and KOWS.

Running From Home – An Introduction to Bert Jansch
Deeper Roots takes on new Americana. There is a lot of good roots-influenced music out there, you just need to know where to go. Country, alt-country, swing, gospel, blues, soul, and bluegrass continue to be heard and loved finding a voice across a (very) wide canvas called ‘Americana’. On Deeper Roots this week on KWTF radio, we’ll curate the sounds of new Americana that play weekday mornings on KWTF from 9am to 11am (including Thursday’s Blue Moon Americana show). Tune in for new music from Parker Millsap, The Cactus Blossoms, Sturgill Simpson, Ben Harper, Bonnie Raitt, and Loretta Lynn.
It’s popular in just about every form…well, not so with gospel…but it’s tradition goes back to minstrelsy: the song that has a humorous hook or a running joke to share or maybe a bandleader who takes us into new a ridiculous territories. We’ve got a lot of novelty tunes of this nature to bring you this week on Deeper Roots… a bit of a departure from our normal fare but it’s all for the fun. We’ll hear country sounds from Johnny Cash and Roger Miller, tearjerkers and rock therapy from Mabel Scott, The Chips, and Tiny Hill, and some classic novelty sounds from Danny Kaye, Spike Jones (of course), and Fats Waller.
Once considered in its earliest forms a noble instrument, the history of the guitar can be traced back over forty centuries (yes, that’s 4000 years). While we won’t got back quite so far in our exploration, we will explore the popular form of this instrument in song this week. We’re not going after the genius as much as we go after the topic with songs whose theme is that of the guitar. It seems that there has always been a personal connection between the instrument and the player, sometimes as a confidant and others as a foil. Our show will feature yodeling guitars, lonely guitars, Bo’s guitar, long-legged pickers, amigos, and a number of performances about ‘one’s first guitar’. Join Dave Stroud for plenty in a guitar themed journey.

We’re going to take a step away from vintage releases in our first episode of 2016 and look back at last year’s Americana releases, focusing on tributes and covers from some of the very best performers of the time. We’ll hear from Happy Traum, Jorma Kaukonen, Robert Earl Keen Jr., the Alvin Brothers, Bob Dylan, Jonathan Edwards and many others as the cover music from the past century. While most are those of tradition, we’ll also hear covers of Stephen Foster, Carter Family, and Woody Guthrie for good measure. Tribute albums include Bob Dylan’s Shadows in the Night and Asleep at the Wheel’s “Still The King” Bob Wills tribute. Lots of territory to cover so I hope you’ll join in!
