Love is in the air. And so is some foot-tappin’ rhythm on a Friday in our shelter-in-place here in Sonoma County. The genuine stuff brought to you by the supporters and underwriters of Community Radio here in the county. Tune in for a blast of soul and rhythm and blues in the key of love with Etta James, Ella Johnson, Julia Lee, Jackie Wilson, The Flairs, and the great Barbara Lynn. Our social distancing matters even though our first desire is to be close with each other. If we can’t have it first or second hand, then will take it third hand. So why not tune into some third hand roots sounds, all with the honest theme of love: sugar coated love, the miracle of love, and makin’ love. You can tune us in Friday evenings on 92.3 FM in Sonoma County or streaming to the world at krjf.org.

We’re going the free form route today, celebrating an eclectic blend of gospel with the likes of Clara Ward and Patsy Cline, country greats from The Sons of the Pioneers and Skeets McDonald, doo wop street corner ballads from The Sheppards and The Royals, and vocals from Nat King Cole, Ethel Waters, and John Hiatt. Oh, in addition to a few choice show tunes, we’ll touch on topics of tears, loneliness, great speckled birds, and a visit to Treasure Island with Satchmo. Quarantine offers time for reflection but it also offers time for enjoying the sounds of deeper tracks. And that’s what you get day in and day out on Community Radio for Sonoma County. Join us.

A while back we explored road songs in the genres of blues and tradition. This week’s show complements the theme with a country flavor. Songs of the lonesome road, the lost highway, the wrong highway taken, as well as hitting the road with those classic country kings of the road and highway queens. We’ll hear some early Waylon Jennings, bluegrass from Bill Monroe, trucker laments from Red Simpson, and a tribute to the Carters on the Road to Kaintuck. We’ve battened down the hatches, closed shop, and are practicing social distancing as if our lives (and those of our neighbors) depended on it. Join Dave Stroud on a KWTF Friday evening remote production of Deeper Roots.

Deeper Roots explores the motor city soul sounds of Motown, paying our respects to the incredible songwriting team who defined the Hitsville, USA sound in the mid-sixties: brothers Eddie and Brian Holland, along with Lamont Dozier. The goods were delivered. The brassy, bass-driven rhythm and targeted stories of the heart stand alongside virtually any songwriting team of the century. Fact: this songwriting team wrote ten of the twelve #1 songs of The Supremes and were an institution alongside the music of The Funk Brothers. We’ll hear from Martha & The Vandellas, The Four Tops, Marvin Gaye, and a host of others this Friday morning while we’re tucked into our homes, waiting out the storm. Tune in and add a little bit of soul to your day.
