Sam Cooke was a pioneer and embodied the crossover influence of mid-century soul. His songwriting, his powerful and soulful vocals, his civil rights activism, and his presence as a performer could not have been a better foundation to build a framework. It was a blend of gospel, pop, rhythm and blues, and early rock that led to the sound of Motor City soul. Our show today will feature Sam’s music as our vintage embellishments that surround a wonderful collection of new sounds from under the Americana tent this morning. New sounds from Waylon Payne, OCMS, Dion, and Built To Spill are just a sampling of the new sounds we’ve got for you today. I’ll also be sharing a wonderful new track (of which there are many) from Bob Dylan’s new album “Rough and Rowdy Ways” which is one of his very best from the past couple of decades. Good to hear the bard’s songwriting ice pick is as sharp as ever. Tune in and enjoy.
