King Cole Covers

Nat King Cole’s transition from a respected jazz pianist to a mainstream icon was a perfect storm of technical brilliance, a groundbreaking vocal style, and a persona that radiated “suave sophistication.” While jazz purists sometimes lamented his move toward pop, it was his ability to blend jazz’s complexity with pop’s accessibility that made him a household name. He delivered hit after hit with a penchant for candidates (or entries from) the Great American Songbook. With this in mind, we’ll take this week’s show in an direction that honors the songs he became most famous for…from Bobby Troup’s Route 66 to Billy Strayhorn’s Lush Life…covered by others including some rocking tributes, some ballads in the style of country and bluesy soul numbers from Marvin Gaye and Sam Cooke. Blue and cool is the mood as we spin the dial back to the 1950s — a decade of chrome, tailfins, Cold War tension, Beat poetry, and late-night cigarette smoke curling toward the ceiling of a dimly lit club. Beneath the middle class culture of the day, there was a restless heartbeat of jazz. This was the era when bebop matured into cool, hard bop caught fire, and modal explorations began reshaping the language of improvisation. Artists like Miles Davis refined understatement into revolution, John Coltrane stretched harmony toward spiritual searching, Thelonious Monk bent notes and expectations alike, and Ella Fitzgerald turned the human voice into a virtuosic instrument. Jazz in the ’50s wasn’t background music — it was conversation, protest, poetry, and possibility. Dave’s selected some important landmarks and deep tracks that take you into those dusty digital bins of jazz and improvisation this morning on Deeper Roots.

It’s one of the novelty topics but that’s only whistling in the graveyard now, isn’t it? An episode of vipers and wild nights backstage, a reflection of the party atmosphere and the debauchery that would often take place after long nights of performing and jiving. We’ll also touch on the devil’s weed, as it was once known before the recognition of Victorian sensibilities was ejected in favor of common sense. The music will include primarily blues and jazz but we’ll also dip into some later novelty sounds to keep us all honest with the topics of coke, opium, marijuana, and pills on the agenda. Sweet bath house sounds from Bette Midler, wistful sounds from Phil Lawrence and Dan Hicks take center stage alongside the music of The Cats & The Fiddle, Fats Waller, Barney Bigard, and Cab Calloway. Quite a lineup and quite a topic surrounded by junkies, reefers, hadacol concoctions, and mellow stuff…so we hope you’ll drop by on a Friday morning in Sonoma County.

Mambo Baby!

Well, it might be a bit of a stretch, and it might have been a bit of a fad, but it also flavored the beverage. Mambo. A lively mix born of a Latin dance of Cuban descent in the 30s and introduced by Perez Prado to an American audience in the 40s. It found it’s way into the popular music culture from big band to jazz and R&B. This week’s show samples some of the performances that were totally infected by its rhythm. We’ll hear from Mickey Baker, Wynonie Harris, and Tiny Grimes on the R&B side as well as the bandleaders who brassed it up including Perez Prado, Desi Arnaz, and Xavier Cugat.

It’s a topical theme…it’s a medicinal thing…it’s a blend of sounds celebrating vipers and jives from the past century. There is no shortage of material to pull from the well of Americana…whether that be from the 1920s or from the 2010s. We’ll hear mellow sounds from Trixie Smith, Charlie Burse & His Memphis Mudcats, winsome themes from Fountains of Wayne, snark from The Harlem Hamfats, and recent relevance from The Devil Makes Three. While April 20th has passed, the topic is a lively one here in California these days and we’re mostly on friendly terms with the weed…even for those that don’t imbibe. Mellow R&B from a broad spectrum of performers who made a mark in the decade or so that preceded rock ‘n roll’s infancy. Indeed, they participated in the birth of the form with a sound that included the vocal quartet, jump and swing, and an incessant beat that could not be ignored. We’ll hear from the ‘feisty females’ of the day: Varetta Dillard, Blue Lu Barker, Big Maybelle, and Bernice Gooden right alongside Buddy Johnson’s Orchestra, the Three Bits of Rhythm, The Cats & the Fiddle, and Luke Jones and the Orchestra. But there was a raw, bluesy, expressive, jump sound coming from the barrooms and halls of the urban expanses of Chicago, Kansas City, New York City, and beyond; something that would become known as R&B and would later be the bedrock of rock and roll. It also provides us with an outlet for the many things that we do as part of our celebration. One of them involves the backdrop of music. We’ll visit the sounds introduced by the Second Line of “Sugar Boy” Crawford, Fats Domino, and Stop, Inc. We’ll follow with The Meters, Bo Dollis and The Wild Magnolias, Louis Armstrong, and many others in a show that separates our locales by almost 2000 miles.
