Superstition and luck are the topics for our theme show on a Friday night in Sonoma County on community radio. Deeper Roots explores those superstitious topics of charms, clovers, black cats, and numerology this week. The Hangman’s Rope

Songs about one of the most controversial of mankind’s attempt to balance the scales: the death penalty. Studies point to the fact that at least one in 25 people sentenced to the death penalty in the U.S. are innocent and yet the death penalty is legal in 32 states. In China, corporate fraud can be punishable by death…if it were the case here, our government would probably be on the straight and narrow. But I digress. The music this week will explore the long walk to eternity through the eyes of the condemned; the knowledge of the eventuality of the executioner’s song is clarity. And we’ve got country from a whole host of obscure characters, some blues and boogie, along with just a little bit of folk and bluegrass. A hundred years of the hangman’s rope in reflection.

A nostalgic celebration of youth, love, and idealism…some saccharine sounds for a Friday evening whose theme is young at heart. We’ll be digging into mid-century popular sounds, with a laser focus on the many songs for young lovers that poured out of AM radio during the early years of jukebox rock from the soda fountain. But we’ll also reflect on the loss of youth, childlike wonder, and a little bit of tongue-in-cheek heartbreak and bitterness. Country sounds from Hayes Carll and Roger Miller, symphonic soliloquies from Percy Faith and Ray Conniff, and reflective studies by Bob Dylan and Antony, and some growing pains from Tom Waits and Billy Bob Thornton. Time is Passing

Theme time this week! We are going to dip into a sometimes raucous, other times wistful, blend of country, blues, jazz, and what-not…to celebrate (or is it bemoan) the passing of time in our show this week. The clock is ticking, the calendar flipping, and the little blue orb keeps spinning around that big bright one. And all the while we live our lives celebrating the luminous sounds on Deeper Roots; this week featuring Johnny Otis, Fenton Robinson, Bob Dylan, Texas Jim Lewis, Roy Acuff, and so many others. Deeper Fats Waller

In his brief life of 39 years, Tom Waller (better known as ‘Fats’) took what he learned from the church organ and broke the bonds of sacred for the swinging sounds that he would learn from Willie “The Lion” Smith, James P. Johnson, and Eubie Blake. While the organ (or, as he liked to call it “The God Box”) was his first love, it was his songwriting and ebullient personality that would infuse his melodies that set him apart. The American Songbook chapter called “Joy” is full of his music and the tragedy of losing him too soon to his demons likely prevented us being further enriched. Tune in for two hours of music that inspired Fats as well as the music he gave us.
