….’Cause it’s gotta have soul, rhythm, and blues to make the cut this week. That’s the answer to the question. We’ll look to a couple of iconic comedians from the late 70s to inspire us with a collection of sounds lifted from their albums…and their movies. Why not? Jake and Elwood teamed up with Stax legends Steve Cropper, Matt “Guitar” Murphy, and Duck Dunn to deliver punch after punch and we’re going to sample the best of it. One of the more popular topics that follows the Americana and roots landscape (aside from love, death, and the gospel) is the topic of ice cold beer. Beer in the morning, beer in the evening, beer at suppertime. The westward movement is celebrated once more as Deeper Roots spends two hours digging through those dusty digital bins to find the more popular and, in some cases, more obscure pieces about the one of the great migrations. In addition to the 19th century land-grab where the call was “Westward Ho!”, we’ll hear songs about the not-so-celebratory movement following the 20th century Dust Bowl migration. Tune in for blues from Lowell Fulson, Barbecue Bob, and Albert King; country from Merle Haggard, Asleep at the Wheel, and John Hartford; tradition and folk from Woody Guthrie, Darryl Holter, and Jay Farrar; and jazz/pop from Nat King Cole, Bing Crosby, and Sol Hoopii. Songs from the past century will fill the air with second hand music smoke…all songs that reflect either the hawkish or ‘dove-ish’ opinions in words and music. We have two hours of country, jazz, blues, pop, and all those adventurous styles in between that use nicotine for their muse. Country from k.d. lang to The Sons of The Pioneers, R&B from the likes of Lucky Millender to Benny Spellman, some doo-wop, some Sam Cooke soul, and a little bit of sweet big band sounds from Fred Waring’s Pennsylvanians. Maybe we won’t celebrate the habit…just the music.
