I’ll say…finger pickin’ good music featuring finger pickin’ great performers from the past century. We’ve got a two hour sampling of sounds from the likes of Doc Watson, Jorma Kaukonen, Chet Atkins, Tommy Emmanuel, Blind Blake, Riley Puckett, and (of course) Merle Travis. Our Wednesday evening will keep it pretty folksy and traditional for the most part, leaning on tradition and the very best in string picking and chord strumming. Deeper Roots takes on new Americana. There is a lot of good roots-influenced music out there, you just need to know where to go. Country, alt-country, swing, gospel, blues, soul, and bluegrass continue to be heard and loved finding a voice across a (very) wide canvas called ‘Americana’. Folks Songs of North America II - Spirituals — Folks Songs of North America II – Spirituals

The second installment in our exploration of the Alan Lomax book of the same name, this time focusing our energies on tradition in gospel and spiritual. Leader-chorus work songs to lighten the load of heavy labor; dancing songs to quicken the spirit on those rare holidays; and spirituals to replace their lost African religions and to console in times of physical torment and spiritual degradation are all captured here, including the stories and lineage behind the original pieces. Deeper Blind Willie Johnson

Blind Willie Johnson’s music seems to resurface through discovery with each generation and understandably so. Because tied to the meager catalog of thirty songs that he recorded over some four sessions between December, 1927 and April, 1930, is a dark and foreboding voice in the night. Its glow is that of a solitary candle in a room of shadows in a house whose bones have fallen to derelict and decay. Willie is telling us to take notice.

The story of Blind Willie Johnson was best transcribed in Sam Charters’ introduction and liner notes for Columbia’s Roots & Blues Series’ “The Complete Works of Blind Willie Johnson”. We’ll go a bit deeper, dedicating our two hours to Blind Willie Johnson featuring tracks from the new tribute album “God Don’t Never Change: The Songs of Blind Willie Johnson”, some classic recordings of Blind Willie, as well as covers of every stripe and style.

We’ll revisit the third decade of the 20th century where the social and cultural watershed events following the first World War were more than one could have anticipated. The Jazz Age; Prohibition; Radio and the Victrola meant entertainment could be had in the front room, replacing the family and neighborhood parlor entertainment. While the Great Depression loomed on the horizon, the music that found the middle was hopeful and full of man-meets-girl songs were all the rage…even if signs of hard times to come were easily spotted. Listen in for a chronological selection that includes the sounds of Duke Ellington, Paul Whiteman, Annette Hanshaw, Ethel Waters, and the peerless pop icons Al Jolson and Eddie Cantor.

Guitar Theme

Once considered in its earliest forms a noble instrument, the history of the guitar can be traced back over forty centuries (yes, that’s 4000 years). While we won’t got back quite so far in our exploration, we will explore the popular form of this instrument in song this week. We’re not going after the genius as much as we go after the topic with songs whose theme is that of the guitar. It seems that there has always been a personal connection between the instrument and the player, sometimes as a confidant and others as a foil. Our show will feature yodeling guitars, lonely guitars, Bo’s guitar, long-legged pickers, amigos, and a number of performances about ‘one’s first guitar’. Folk Songs of North America was first published in 1960. Compiled by Alan Lomax (with melodies transcribed by Peggy Seeger), it featured traditional music organized by locale and topic. The anecdotes provided by Lomax and others were culled from both the oral and transcribed traditions of those who listened and performed. Deeper Roots goes deeper and features sets organized by topical pieces outlined in the book. Performers of the early century are featured including Dock Boggs, David McCarn, Gid Tanner, the Carolina Tar Heels, and The Bently Boys. We’ll also feature a handful of mid-to-late century performers to cap things off.
