Yip Harburg was a songmaker. He was part of a select few in the early to mid-century who found their calling as lyricists, writing words that transformed music to story and story to film and Broadway spectacles. We could gloss over his contributions by simply saying “he’s the guy who wrote Over The Rainbow or April in Paris or Brother, Can You Spare a Dime”. But his career was more than that. It’s no secret that Yip’s politics were carefully crafted in song. The phrases “honky-tonk parade” and “Barnum and Bailey world” were veiled criticisms of the “phony as it can be” corporate and political leadership in America, written by a freethinking, socially conscious lyricist. Our show today will honor some of his best songs and include interview excerpts featuring both Yip and his son, Ernie.

That's Entertainment! The Best Of The MGM Musicals
To say that the year 2016 was a bummer year is an understatement. While entertainment would take a backseat to the social and political conflagrations of the year, it was a very tough year for music lovers, nonetheless. Deeper Roots will be sharing tracks from some of the great, both known and unknown, who left us. We’ll hear from both Prince as well as Dan Hicks; Natalie Cole and Lonnie Mack; Juan Gabriel and Paul Kantner. It does not end there and we’ll barely be able to cover them all. Tune into our last show of the year and help us remember what these performers brought us.

God Don't Never Change: The Songs Of Blind Willie Johnson
The Record Industry Association of America (RIAA) produced a list a few years back that they called the “Songs of The Century”. It was concocted based on a questionable set of sampling and was to represent and “promote a better understanding of America’s musical and cultural heritage.” The voting pool was a strange mixture elected officials, school students and teachers, as well as industry professionals. The respondent pool was about 200. The list is woefully inadequate but certainly worth discussing. Deeper Roots will spend this week exploring the top 30 (of 365) and follow up with its own list in a second episode next week. Listen in as we stretch the imagination.
