Mix of the Blues

Deeper Roots will spend time with a variety of blues styles this week with no focus but the roots of feeling blue, themes about being blue, junker’s blues, bar fly blues, cold rainy day blues, and the dark and somber blues. We’ll feature the urban sounds of Lowell Fulson and Bobby Blue Bland, the smooth sounds of T-Bone Walker, and we’ll also pick on some early jazz and blues vocals including Bertha “Chippie” Hill, Hattie McDaniels, and Memphis Minnie.

Pop Music of the 1920s

Pop Music of the 1920s
Pop Music of the 1920s

We’ll revisit the third decade of the 20th century where the social and cultural watershed events following the first World War were more than one could have anticipated. The Jazz Age; Prohibition; Radio and the Victrola meant entertainment could be had in the front room, replacing the family and neighborhood parlor entertainment. While the Great Depression loomed on the horizon, the music that found the middle was hopeful and full of man-meets-girl songs were all the rage…even if signs of hard times to come were easily spotted. Listen in for a chronological selection that includes the sounds of Duke Ellington, Paul Whiteman, Annette Hanshaw, Ethel Waters, and the peerless pop icons Al Jolson and Eddie Cantor.

Deeper Cole Porter

Deeper Cole Porter
Deeper Cole Porter

American composer Cole Porter wrote words and music for over thirty stage and film musicals. His works were typically a model of sophistication, humor, and charm that would change popular musical theater. Deeper Roots takes a look at this songwriter whose music influenced generations of the American patchwork of styles including country, rock, pop, and R&B. We’ll hear from the torch vocals of Betty Carter, playful LA country from Michael Nesmith, the cool evening jazz of Julie London, rocking R&B from Roy Brown, and the contemporary country sounds of the Texoma All-Stars. And more, of course.

This week we’ll share ‘contemporary roots’ infused music including the sounds of Howell Devine, Jason Isbell, and Ian Tyson as well as a broad selection of R&B (from The Blenders), early blues (from Blind Lemon Jefferson), and ‘ding dong daddy’ country swing (featuring Bob Wills). There She Goes – KOWS 12/16/15

There She Goes
There She Goes

West County has seen it’s first consistent (and consecutive) days of rain and boy did we need it. El Nino looks to be making some waves. We’ll be making some waves this week on our Wednesday night foray into the past century of America’s music. We’ll hear new music from the Oxford American Georgia music issue, as well as a good share of early country, some Stephen Foster (by the Hamilton County Ramblers), and some Jelly Roll Morton. There will be a few local performers to sweeten the mix: Kevin Russell, Carl Hendel & Eddie Meisse, and an alumni of Montgomery High School in Santa Rosa…Dan Hicks. Tune in for music that keeps on giving.

Deeper Dr. John

Deeper Dr. John
Deeper Dr. John

Mac Rebennack’s been around and the music, the culture, the people…they’ve embellished his art with a character like no other in roots music. He’s known them all: James Booker, Professor Longhair, Huey Smith, and Doc Pomus. He’s performed with them, composed for them, and broken bread with them. And when he takes the stage, whether that is in the traditional Indian celebratory garb or the frocked coat and hat, you can be certain that his performance will get your attention. He is coarse yet gentle, as punctual on the keys as he is laid back and lazy with them. This week’s show will sample a small set of his contributions to the American songbook including performances by Roland Stone, B.B. King, Charlie Rich, Solomon Burke, and Irma Thomas. And we’ll also hear plenty from the good Doctor himself.

Take Me Back – KOWS Nov 18, 2015

Take Me Back
Take Me Back

Our final show at the old KOWS studio will feature the lineup you might expect…with a couple of themes running through it. The ‘take me back’ theme works well as we bring in Tennessee Ernie Ford, Jimmy Rushing, and Peter Rowan to make the plea and we’ve got the gospel themed pleas of working on a building from The Highway QCs. In addition, we’ve got some doo-wop, some ladies whose theme was ‘blues is her business’, and a run of country swing and bluegrass…all packed into two hours of elementary roots. Tune in after dinner for dessert.

Let’s Live – KOWS Nov 5, 2015

Let's Live
Let’s Live

We’ll be bringing another eclectic blend of music from the past for an evening set kicks off with sounds of New Orleans beginning with a medley from the Bayou Maharajah, James Booker and closing with Irma Thomas. In addition to our usual run of bluegrass, jazz, and blues…we’ll prepare some piping hot biscuits from the country shack with Alan Lomax, Flatt & Scruggs, Pappy O’Daniel and the Hillbilly Boys, and Kacey Musgraves. There will also be a rare piece of early blues piano work from Ollie Shepard and the early century jazz band sounds of Enric Madriguera, Jimmie Lunceford, and Fletcher Henderson. Two full hours of Deeper Roots on weekday evening…carrying us over the midweek hump so that it’s all downhill from there…

In The Gloaming – KOWS Oct 24, 2015

In The Gloaming
In The Gloaming

Our Saturday morning show opens with some caffeine-driven music…literally… songs about the magic bean, that morning beverage that starts the day for some of us. We’ve got swamp pop from Randy & The Rockets, some jumpin’ jive from Cab Calloway, twilight reflections from Jonatha Brooke and The Sons of The Pioneers, and some Chet Atkins, David Lindley, and Eilen Jewell. KOWS community radio studios will be moving before the end of the year to a very central West County location that will bring us in closer contact with our listeners…and our Deeper Roots. And some exciting news! Deeper Roots moves to weekly broadcasts on KOWS.
