Deeper Roots goes to the deeper wells of black American gospel which is one of the more powerful examples of bedrock sounds that we play here on our show. This show includes hand-picked classics such as “The Old Rugged Cross”, “Joshua Fit the Battle”, “Trouble in My Way”, and a medley of freedom classics from the SNCC Freedom Singers. It’s a mix of jubilee quartets, female gospel greats, sensational musical sermons, as well as Aretha, Sister Tharpe, Mahalia, and The Staples. Tune in for more….a whole lot more.

He Is My Story: The Sanctified Soul Of Arizona Dranes
The argument has been made that Bob Dylan’s earliest music contained more prophetic prose than his deep dive into the Christian faith in Slow Train Coming. His pen had always leaned on the big story lines of Old and New Testaments but he went all out, much as he did in his ‘rock’ conversion, when he made the direct connection to matters of the soul that he would find in the Bible. This week’s show features the gospel songs of Bob Dylan, performed by gospel greats The Dixie Hummingbirds, The Fairfield Four, The Mighty Clouds of Joy, and so many others. Tune into Sonoma County Community radio for a Dylan gospel fest including Maria Muldaur and Willie Nile.
The first of two gospel Friday mornings coming up on Deeper Roots in June. This week, we’ll follow a ‘heavenly’ theme. The Christian vision of afterlife’s reward is expressed in music on a Friday morning in West County (of all places). There will be country and black gospel sounds emanating from the UMC in downtown Sebastopol on KOWS radio as we share performances about heaven including the electric voices of Marion Williams and Marie Knight; the rocking celebration of the good book from Sister Rosetta and Brother Claude Ely; and country gospel enlightenment from Willie and Bobbie Nelson. This one is worth the wait and worth it’s weight in heavenly gold. Tune in!

Gospel music informed much of the music from the early century and the blues took it’s soul and inspiration from many passages. Numerous street corner buskers promoted the scripture and many, like Blind Willie Johnson, Gary Davis, Oda Mae Terrell, and Mother McCollum were known as musical evangelists in addition to their place in the church. And the spirituals also informed the music of Blind Boy Fuller, Charley Patton, Barbecue Bob, Blind Lemon Jefferson, and so many early blues men and women. We’ll sample a few and take our Friday evening show with some reverence and grit.

We gravitate towards gospel because it’s roots are so entwined with virtually every form of music we feature on Deeper Roots; so we’ll revisit the sound once more. However, in this episode we’ll focus on the rock and rhythm inspiration…gospel performances that were more worldliness than holiness. Jesus Rocked The Jukebox is the name of an album that we’ve leaned on in this episode and expanded from there with examples of over-the-top performances in the key of the sacred but with the pounding rhythmic syncopation of the secular. Join Dave Stroud as he pulls out the stop with the likes of The Dixie Hummingbirds, The Detroiters, The Highway QCs, Fannie Bell Chapman, and a host of others. Breathtaking gospel for a Friday evening in Sonoma County.

It’s the story of evil told in the voice of the blues. All things evil are explored in the voices of gospel, country blues, urban blues, and the folk blues. Evil ways, bad blood, fear, and the depths to which the evil in man’s heart can go are the themes tonight in a show that features the likes of Otis Spann, Elmore James, Henry Truvillion, The Golden Gate Quartet, and many others. All of this coming to you on a cold December evening in Sonoma County.

It’s a two part celebration of the very best in gospel sounds…songs and spirituals that are embedded in our culture. There just was not enough time to capture the great songs like “I’ll Fly Away”, “This Train”, “Please In The Valley”, “Down By The Riverside”, and so many others in just a single episode…so we broke it into two parts which is still barely enough. We’ll play the influential sacred versions alongside the celebratory secular ones with performers like Chet Atkins, Mahalia Jackson, Elvis Presley, and the CBS Trumpeteers. Tune in for two hours of rousing gospel in another two hour Americana roots journey on Sonoma County community radio.

Amazing Grace – His Greatest Sacred Performances (Disc 1)
The second installment in our exploration of the Alan Lomax book of the same name, this time focusing our energies on tradition in gospel and spiritual. Leader-chorus work songs to lighten the load of heavy labor; dancing songs to quicken the spirit on those rare holidays; and spirituals to replace their lost African religions and to console in times of physical torment and spiritual degradation are all captured here, including the stories and lineage behind the original pieces. We’ll hear from a diverse selection of performers including The Dixie Jubilee Singers, Odetta, Nina Simone, Tom Waits, Eva Cassidy, and many others.
