Free Form – Old Records

Old records are honored…as they are each week. The 33s, the 45s, and the 78s…all forms, all speeds. We’ll take a musical trip back to the dawn of doo wop, head to the border for an encounter with el toro relajo, visit the Big Broadcast sounds of early radio and hotel orchestras including Ted Weems and the Sunshine Boys. We’ll also gear up for a classic 1914 recording by the piano genius Felix Arndt. Arthur Alexander, Los Lobos, Tampa Red, and Left Frizzell also join in…just for you on a free form Friday morning on Deeper Roots.

Superstition

Superstition and luck are the topics for our theme show on a Friday night in Sonoma County on community radio. Deeper Roots explores those superstitious topics of charms, clovers, black cats, and numerology this week.  Join Dave Stroud for blues from the Wolf, Lucille Bogan, and Albert King; county star power from Skeets McDonald, Ernest Tubb, and Elvis; plus a lot of special treats including tracks from Bill Wyman’s Rhythm Kings, Casey Bill Weldon, Joe Barry, and Larry Campbell. We’ll also be wishing on star power from Cliff Edwards and Petra Haden…and four leaf clover luck from Nick Lucas, Bill Haley, and Al Miller. From the turn of the century to a couple of contemporary sounds.

Truck Drivin’ Songs

White line fever…that endless gray ribbon…asphalt mixed with bennies…and a whole lot of attitude around semis, mile markers, county mounties, and bobtail returns. Terminology you won’t hear too much on our show…except for this show which shares the songs of the long-haulers. Bill Kirchen, Red Simpson, Buck Owens, and Merle Haggard are just a sample of the performers joining in the fun where Cliff Bruner & His Boys introduce us to the first truck driving song “Truck Driver Blues” right up to that bad boy honky tonkin’ guitar trucker Dale Watson. You can’t escape the 18 wheel energy on Sonoma County Community Radio…straight from the Bakersfield asphalt to yours.

The Old Chisholm Trail

Songs about moonlight on the trail this week. We revisit songs about Old Paint, cowpokes, outlaws, and the wide expanse of the range in this week’s show. Tradition, temperance, and memories of the Red River Valley with Michael Martin Murphey, Jimmie Driftwood, Rex Allen, Powder River Jack (featuring Kitty Lee), and many more cowboys from Hollywood and the old Navajo Trail. Storytelling and nostalgic novelties, most elevating the hardscrabble life of the West to a Disney featurette. Right here on Sonoma County community radio.

Who We Lost in 2017

We look back at the great ones we lost in 2017…and there were a number of great ones:  Fats Domino, Chuck Berry, and Tom Petty. While two hours provides only a limited amount of time, our parameters are such that we look at contributions and influences, focusing our honor to those who fit the roots and the body of work that these greats brought to the fore.  We’ll feature music of Rosalie Sorrels, Greg Allman, Steely Dan, Don Williams, Glen Campbell, and numerous others whose lives will live on in their music. Join Dave Stroud for two hours of music from the last century on Sonoma County community radio.

Songs About Youth

A nostalgic celebration of youth, love, and idealism…some saccharine sounds for a Friday evening whose theme is young at heart. We’ll be digging into mid-century popular sounds, with a laser focus on the many songs for young lovers that poured out of AM radio during the early years of jukebox rock from the soda fountain. But we’ll also reflect on the loss of youth, childlike wonder, and a little bit of tongue-in-cheek heartbreak and bitterness. Country sounds from Hayes Carll and Roger Miller, symphonic soliloquies from Percy Faith and Ray Conniff, and reflective studies by Bob Dylan and Antony, and some growing pains from Tom Waits and Billy Bob Thornton. How can you go wrong?

Five Year Anniversary

Time has flown like it always does…it’s been since August 2012 and we’re taking time out for a special celebration on weekly show. Dave Stroud will be reaching back and revisiting tracks he played on the first couple of  shows back in the day…including tracks from Geraint Watkins, Fats Waller, Sister Rosetta, Big Joe Turner, Nina Simone, and a host of others. Deeper Roots has kept its promise to it’s listeners…back then and right to the current day. Tune in! Join us and raise a glass.
