Hot Summer Days
Hot Summer Days

As we make it over the summer hump, we’ll take time to celebrate all the things we love about the summer heat.  Those stunning summer skies, sea breezes, backyard barbecues, and the lift of a summer rain. We’ve got the beach sounds of the sixties, Hawaiian medleys from the islands, sophisticated sass from Buster Poindexter, hot kissin’ from H-Bomb Ferguson, the summer rain, the summer sky, and the Summer Wind from Frank Sinatra.  Rock, zydeco, country, pop, bluegrass, rock, and so much of what comes from the in-between this week on Deeper Roots.

Time is Passing

Time Is Passing
Time Is Passing

Theme time this week! We are going to dip into a sometimes raucous, other times wistful, blend of country, blues, jazz, and what-not…to celebrate (or is it bemoan) the passing of time in our show this week. The clock is ticking, the calendar flipping, and the little blue orb keeps spinning around that big bright one. And all the while we live our lives celebrating the luminous sounds on Deeper Roots; this week featuring Johnny Otis, Fenton Robinson, Bob Dylan, Texas Jim Lewis, Roy Acuff, and so many others. Time may be passing and we may like to reminisce and wax nostalgic, but we press on…driven by music from the past century (among other things).

Mix of the Blues
Mix of the Blues

Deeper Roots will spend time with a variety of blues styles this week with no focus but the roots of feeling blue, themes about being blue, junker’s blues, bar fly blues, cold rainy day blues, and the dark and somber blues. We’ll feature the urban sounds of Lowell Fulson and Bobby Blue Bland, the smooth sounds of T-Bone Walker, and we’ll also pick on some early jazz and blues vocals including Bertha “Chippie” Hill, Hattie McDaniels, and Memphis Minnie.

Smoke! Smoke! Smoke!

Smoke Smoke Smoke
Smoke Smoke Smoke

Songs from the past century will fill the air with second hand music smoke…all songs that reflect either the hawkish or ‘dove-ish’ opinions in words and music. We have two hours of country, jazz, blues, pop, and all those adventurous styles in between that use nicotine for their muse. Country from k.d. lang to The Sons of The Pioneers, R&B from the likes of Lucky Millender to Benny Spellman, some doo-wop, some Sam Cooke soul, and a little bit of sweet big band sounds from Fred Waring’s Pennsylvanians. Maybe we won’t celebrate the habit…just the music.

Robert Johnson Tribute

Robert Johnson Tribute
Robert Johnson Tribute

It’s a two hour Robert Johnson tribute on Deeper Roots Radio: A Century of America’s Music. Legend has it…yes, we have all heard the story. But it is the music that makes us want to believe. In a short recording career where he recorded less than thirty tracks over two sessions, the songs are all his by identification. When you hear the Stones’ cover of “You Got to Move”, or virtually any that Johnson recorded…you overlook their lineage somewhat because their heritage began in the hotel room where he recorded them. We’ll hear from Rory Block, Robert Lockwood, Jr., Nigel Watson & Peter Green, and Bob Brozman as Deeper Roots celebrates the music of Robert Johnson.

The witching hour. The darkest moment in our day where the bell tolls another in the heart of the ancient wood. A muse for poets, writers, and songsmiths over the ages….midnight. Field Recording Covers

Coming up on our last live show of May, what better way but to dig just a little bit deeper into some of the field recordings of the first half of the 20th century that found popularity in the country, blues, and popular charts. Some of these songs had the ‘right’ rhythm or struck a chord with the message they sent. While most were traditional pieces by the time the musicologists had arrived with their primitive recording machines, others were original and told just the right story. We’ll hear Eric Clapton, Aaron Copland, B.B. King, and Tom Waits right alongside the originals done by Smith Casey, Gwen Foster, Belton Reese, and Ora Dell Graham.

Finger Pickin’ Good

Finger Pickin' Good
Finger Pickin’ Good

I’ll say…finger pickin’ good music featuring finger pickin’ great performers from the past century. We’ve got a two hour sampling of sounds from the likes of Doc Watson, Jorma Kaukonen, Chet Atkins, Tommy Emmanuel, Blind Blake, Riley Puckett, and (of course) Merle Travis. Our Wednesday evening will keep it pretty folksy and traditional for the most part, leaning on tradition and the very best in string picking and chord strumming. All this and more on our roots music show which is produced exclusively for Sonoma County community radio, both KWTF and KOWS.
