While the show this week is free form (something we like to do every few weeks), we’ll be leaning on a number of ‘connections’ including a couple of sets that feature tracks from the 1950 classic country album “Beyond The Sunset” which was released by Luke The Drifter aka Hank Williams, Sr. We’ll hear interpretations and originals that keep the focus on the country gospel solemnities that made this album one of country’s most interesting albums of the time. We’ll also be rocking with The Prisonaires, Aretha Franklin; riding down the canyon with Gene Autry and Jonathan Edwards; and connecting with boot kicking pieces from Robert Gordon and Elvis. Deeper Fats Waller

In his brief life of 39 years, Tom Waller (better known as ‘Fats’) took what he learned from the church organ and broke the bonds of sacred for the swinging sounds that he would learn from Willie “The Lion” Smith, James P. Johnson, and Eubie Blake. While the organ (or, as he liked to call it “The God Box”) was his first love, it was his songwriting and ebullient personality that would infuse his melodies that set him apart. The American Songbook chapter called “Joy” is full of his music and the tragedy of losing him too soon to his demons likely prevented us being further enriched. Tune in for two hours of music that inspired Fats as well as the music he gave us.

Songs from the past century will fill the air with second hand music smoke…all songs that reflect either the hawkish or ‘dove-ish’ opinions in words and music. We have two hours of country, jazz, blues, pop, and all those adventurous styles in between that use nicotine for their muse. Country from k.d. lang to The Sons of The Pioneers, R&B from the likes of Lucky Millender to Benny Spellman, some doo-wop, some Sam Cooke soul, and a little bit of sweet big band sounds from Fred Waring’s Pennsylvanians. Deeper Roots takes on a theme this week… one that has us on the road, the rails, the ocean deep, and soaring in the clouds. We speak, of course, of our modes and muse of transport in music. There’s a variety of styling to be had including blues from Snooks Eaglin and Lightnin’ Hopkins, 50s country from Cowboy Copas and Bonnie Guitar, pop sounds from Jo Stafford and the Modernaires, and a host of others that all support the theme of the day. It’s popular in just about every form…well, not so with gospel…but it’s tradition goes back to minstrelsy: the song that has a humorous hook or a running joke to share or maybe a bandleader who takes us into new a ridiculous territories. We’ve got a lot of novelty tunes of this nature to bring you this week on Deeper Roots… a bit of a departure from our normal fare but it’s all for the fun.
