Who We Lost in 2017

We look back at the great ones we lost in 2017…and there were a number of great ones:  Fats Domino, Chuck Berry, and Tom Petty. While two hours provides only a limited amount of time, our parameters are such that we look at contributions and influences, focusing our honor to those who fit the roots and the body of work that these greats brought to the fore.  We’ll feature music of Rosalie Sorrels, Greg Allman, Steely Dan, Don Williams, Glen Campbell, and numerous others whose lives will live on in their music. Join Dave Stroud for two hours of music from the last century on Sonoma County community radio.

Songs of John Hiatt

From the ‘pink bedroom’ and edgy alternative to blues and country, R&B and everything in between…John Hiatt’s catalog of recordings is only surpassed by the library of his songs penned over the past fifty years. We’ll take a look back, primarily focusing on covers from his contemporaries; names like Rosanne Cash, Iggy Pop, Bonnie Raitt, Carrie Rodriguez, and Buddy Guy are but just a small sampling of the performers we’ll hear from on another Friday evening on Sonoma County community radio.

Songs About Youth

A nostalgic celebration of youth, love, and idealism…some saccharine sounds for a Friday evening whose theme is young at heart. We’ll be digging into mid-century popular sounds, with a laser focus on the many songs for young lovers that poured out of AM radio during the early years of jukebox rock from the soda fountain. But we’ll also reflect on the loss of youth, childlike wonder, and a little bit of tongue-in-cheek heartbreak and bitterness. Country sounds from Hayes Carll and Roger Miller, symphonic soliloquies from Percy Faith and Ray Conniff, and reflective studies by Bob Dylan and Antony, and some growing pains from Tom Waits and Billy Bob Thornton. How can you go wrong?

The Year in Pop – 1932

We look back…even though we weren’t there. Our show this week will celebrate the American songbook and popular music in the darkest of times: the year 1932. The clouds were only starting to clear in the heart of the Great Depression and the music was hopeful, sometimes saccharine, and the songwriting talent abundant. The performances were not bad either. The Mills Brothers, Bing Crosby, The Boswell Sisters, Cab Calloway, Mildred Bailey, and many others contributed. Tune in on our morning look at the popular sounds of 1932.

Talk To Me

Talk is cheap. Talk can walk…if given the chance. With technology in our face each and every moment … it seems that talk has become even cheaper if not more full of falsehoods. From the very top the sewer of hyperbole flows downhill. But I digress. We’ll go from country to R&B, rock to gospel, and back again…with a theme show about ‘talking’. We’ve got Little Willie John, Nancy Wilson, Bob Wills, Bobby Charles, and Doris Day performing and following the talking points on our roots celebration on Sonoma County community radio.

Everly Brothers Tribute

Hits from the 50s and 60s…covers by contemporary artists… original versions … songs from Phil and Don and from the songwriting team that brought them fame: Boudleaux and Felice Bryant. We’ll spend time on all of them…and more…in a special two hour tribute to the brothers who may not have been able to get along but they got along with their fans beginning with 1957’s Bye Bye Love. They lasted as solid pop, country, and rock crossovers well into the mid-1960s and we’re going to celebrate their music featuring performers including Ray Charles, Linda Ronstadt, The Persuasions, Buddy Miller, and a host of others.

Lazy Day Lullabies

t’s the softer side of Americana sounds from the last 100 years. Digging into the dusty digital bins, Deeper Roots host Dave Stroud will keep the waters calm in the face of the storm that swirls around us. Love songs, songs of wistful desires, trips to the seashore cabin, and instrumentals for dreamers all take center stage in a collection of sounds from the mellow side. We’ll hear pop from Dean Martin, country from Charlie McCoy and Merle Haggard, rock from Mark Knopfler and Roy Orbison, and some soul sounds from Sam Cooke and Irma Thomas.
