Dave Bartholomew Tribute

Dave Bartholomew passed away in June at the age of 100. You may not know his name, but he was one of the architects of a sound that would become rock n’ roll. A New Orleans fixture he was a band leader, trumpet player, arranger, producer, and songwriter whose keen ear and direction led him to become A&R man for Imperial Records where he met Fats Domino. His songwriting and arrangements can be heard on “Blueberry Hill”, “Ain’t That a Shame”, “Lawdy Miss Clawdy”, and hundreds more. Early rock has the signature of Dave Bartholomew just as the music of New Orleans would become identified with the expansiveness of jazz and rhythm & blues. We’ll hear early influences and early productions of Dave’s, prior to his collaborations with Fats Domino. And, as always, so much more.

Songs of Goffin & King

A couple of months ago we featured about 20 minutes on a songwriter special featuring the music of the husband and wife songwriting team of Gerry Goffin and Carole King. We’ll take a bit more time in this week’s show sharing their tunes with you.  From the Brill Building onwards, their songs easily defined the soundtrack for a generation of young Americans of the 1960s. Light-hearted love songs, songs of reflection, and dreamlike hooks were the order: Carole the tunes and Gerry the lyrics. Join Dave Stroud in a look back featuring the music of The Cookies, Earl Jean, Lou Rawls Skeeter Davis, and many more on a Friday evening on Sonoma County Community Radio.

Back to Back Blues

We revisit the blues with some pairings of old and new.  Join Dave Stroud for a selection of classic delta, Chicago, and folk blues from the likes of Robert Wilkins, Elmore James, Magic Slim, and Bukka White. The original classics pair up with updated versions from contemporaries like Sonny Landreth, Jeff Beck, The Allman Brothers, and Rory Block. Blues is the big muddy and the the tributaries flow through vast expanses of cleansing and clarifying. But, unlike those wide rivers like the Mississippi, the tributaries explode into new, deeper channels in the heart of the American landscape.

Rock Bop & Roll

We’ve got a wild mix this week…sounds from the rock n’ roll archives, all done while excavating deeper into the halls of R&B, rockabilly, and country. Don’t count on the usual suspects, although there will be a few attending, but look to the under-the-radar floor pounders. The performances mostly qualify for shouts, shakes, and rocking fool’s gold, including some hillbilly ranters, New Orleans panters, and country banters. Tune in for some obscure Eddie Cochran alongside sounds from Jimmy Dee & The Offbeats, Sax Kari & His Ballin’ Blues Band, Royce Porter with The Kounts, and the Brewster Avenue Rhythm Boys. We’re Deeper Roots… and we’re going deeper on Friday mornings at 9am Pacific on KOWS 92.5 FM, repeating the following week on KWTF 88.1 FM. Check us out!

Who We Lost 2018

We’ll circle back to the past twelve months on Deeper Roots’ Friday evening with a little bit of reverence and a whole lot of thanks.  While this past year struck what could be a mortal blow to democracy as we know it, a number of greats (both high profile and ‘under the radar’) were lost along the way.  The names may not be so easy to collate with only two hours to share but we’ll do our best. Remembering Clarence Fountain, Eddy Clearwater, Otis Rush, Eugene Pitt, Marty Balin, Lorrie Collins, Tony Joe White, Roy Clark, and so many others on a Friday evening on  Sonoma County community radio. Tune into our last show of the year and help us remember what these performers brought us.

Louisiana Gumbo

Back to the bayou. Back to Bourbon Street. From a house of blues to the small clubs out across the river. We’ll be taking a journey into the deeper wells where the influences include urban blues, jazz, French Acadian, Caribbean, and African American.  And one could argue a handful of others. It’s all there in the sounds of south where the pianos and guitar amps are wired into a foundation of tradition…as if performed from a garage or cabin. Cookie & The Cupcakes’ swamp pop, swamp rock from Randy & The Rockets, New Orleans busking from Snooks Eaglin, classic piano noodling from the Professor and Dr. John, and a warm bouillabaisse of southern musical cuisine from Dave Bartholomew and Fats Domino all served up on a Friday evening celebrating a few of the treats on community radio for Sonoma County, KOWS.

The Object of My Affection

It’s a free form episode that follows the American songbook stream of musical consciousness from the early twentieth century right up through some contemporary sounds. A river of rhythm and song…. doo wop shoo wops, the 88 key bounce of boogie woogie, master jelly roll bakers, and sweet confections for you on a warm summer Friday morning from the West County studios of KOWS radio. Performances will include Les Paul, Peggy Lee, Levon Helm, The Adderly Brothers, Jesse Winchester, and a couple dozen more of your favorites. Settle in for a free form collection of memories and musical gems from the past century with your host, Dave Stroud.
