The Original Spins

Deeper Roots this week digs into popular culture in the late 20th century…not so much the deeper aspect, but certainly the roots aspect. The big hits can often be traced back to the originals…sometimes in the same year, sometimes many decades before. We’ll be spinning up ‘the originals’ this week on our community radio show. We’ll take a peek at the hits and share the full blown hits including tracks from Barbie Gaye, Richard Berry, Bessie Banks, and Gloria Jones. You’ll hear the originals of James Brown’s “I Got You”, Soft Cell’s “Tainted Love”, Bill Haley’s “Rock Around the Clock”, and a couple dozen more.

Devil In Me

Dark days with the devil. Self-centered, morally lacking, and incapable of empathizing with human kind. Sound like someone you know? This morning’s show finds us down in the hole where Satan never sleeps and where darkness pervades. There’s a very wide range of topics in our show, including the harnessing of the atom, the soul of man, and the valley where Jordan slices across the heart. Hillbillies from hell, a trip to St. James Infirmary, the lion’s den, and the belly of the whale are all to be seen with tracks from Brother Claude, the Jordan River Boys, The Doors, El Radio Fantastique, and Otis Spann in a show that is certain to have you taking stock of yesterday, today, and tomorrow as we make this social distancing a not-so-transient fixture in our lives. Balance this theme against the sun shining bright on a Spring morning in Sonoma County.

More Murder Ballads

In our Friday morning episode, we’re revisiting the traditional form of the murder ballad and we’ll also take some liberties with some more modern takes from the likes of Tom Waits, Gillian Welch, and Nick Cave. In the traditional form we’ll measure centuries-old cultural aberrations with the stories of gamblers, ramblers, and murdering misogynists that peppered the landscapes of country gospel, Appalachian folk, and urban alleyways. Frankie, Johnny, Stack-O-Lee, William Zanzinger, and Ellen Smith are just a few of the players in today’s show. Join Dave Stroud for a journey through tradition this Friday evening on Community Radio for Sonoma County.

That Mean Old Clock

Watching that pendulum swinging to and fro, we share both our sorrows and our joy in this shelter-in-place situation we’ve found ourselves in. And music. We share music. There is also that ticking and tocking of the clock as time passes; slowly for some and too fast for others. As they say…the days pass slowly and the years just fly right by us…and that was before we found ourselves in isolation. This week’s Deeper Roots show is all about the time factor, specifically growing older with each breath and minute. But, it’s certainly better than the alternative. Join Dave Stroud for another Friday morning on Deeper Roots with music going as far back as 1932 (The Carter Family) and a more recent release from Orthophonic Joy and The Church Sisters…all reflecting on the passing of time and growing old. It’s a theme that is universal, crossing all generations, faiths, and political persuasions. Tune in for reflection on a Friday evening.

Love Bug Boogie

Love is in the air. And so is some foot-tappin’ rhythm on a Friday in our shelter-in-place here in Sonoma County. The genuine stuff brought to you by the supporters and underwriters of Community Radio here in the county. Tune in for a blast of soul and rhythm and blues in the key of love with Etta James, Ella Johnson, Julia Lee, Jackie Wilson, The Flairs, and the great Barbara Lynn. Our social distancing matters even though our first desire is to be close with each other. If we can’t have it first or second hand, then will take it third hand. So why not tune into some third hand roots sounds, all with the honest theme of love: sugar coated love, the miracle of love, and makin’ love. You can tune us in Friday evenings on 92.3 FM in Sonoma County or streaming to the world at krjf.org.

Ya Got Trouble

We’re going the free form route today, celebrating an eclectic blend of gospel with the likes of Clara Ward and Patsy Cline, country greats from The Sons of the Pioneers and Skeets McDonald, doo wop street corner ballads from The Sheppards and The Royals, and vocals from Nat King Cole, Ethel Waters, and John Hiatt. Oh, in addition to a few choice show tunes, we’ll touch on topics of tears, loneliness, great speckled birds, and a visit to Treasure Island with Satchmo. Quarantine offers time for reflection but it also offers time for enjoying the sounds of deeper tracks. And that’s what you get day in and day out on Community Radio for Sonoma County. Join us.

Country Road Songs

A while back we explored road songs in the genres of blues and tradition. This week’s show complements the theme with a country flavor. Songs of the lonesome road, the lost highway, the wrong highway taken, as well as hitting the road with those classic country kings of the road and highway queens. We’ll hear some early Waylon Jennings, bluegrass from Bill Monroe, trucker laments from Red Simpson, and a tribute to the Carters on the Road to Kaintuck. We’ve battened down the hatches, closed shop, and are practicing social distancing as if our lives (and those of our neighbors) depended on it. Join Dave Stroud on a KWTF Friday evening remote production of Deeper Roots.

Holland Dozier Holland

Deeper Roots explores the motor city soul sounds of Motown, paying our respects to the incredible songwriting team who defined the Hitsville, USA sound in the mid-sixties: brothers Eddie and Brian Holland, along with Lamont Dozier. The goods were delivered. The brassy, bass-driven rhythm and targeted stories of the heart stand alongside virtually any songwriting team of the century. Fact: this songwriting team wrote ten of the twelve #1 songs of The Supremes and were an institution alongside the music of The Funk Brothers. We’ll hear from Martha & The Vandellas, The Four Tops, Marvin Gaye, and a host of others this Friday morning while we’re tucked into our homes, waiting out the storm. Tune in and add a little bit of soul to your day.

Night at the Opry & Ryman

All live recordings this week, all from the Grand Ole Opry and the Ryman Auditorium. From its early years in a modest Insurance Building as the WSM Barn Dance, the Grand Ole Opry, for all its staid tradition, has become the capitol of country music. Selectively provincial from early on, it brought together country, gospel, and bluegrass radio listeners well into the Golden Age of Country. Deeper Roots digs into the dusty digital archives for recordings from those times in this week’s show plus brings you some new sounds that have grown from the early seeds sown by Uncle Dave Macon, Roy Acuff and George Hay. We’ve got Bill Monroe, Hank Williams, and the Oak Ridge Quartet filling time alongside the Old Crow Medicine Show and Rhonda Vincent. Join in the revelry!
