Another gospel celebration, this time with a mix of country, bluegrass, classic black gospel, and a very special blending from the annals of rock n’ roll. We’re calling this roots celebration “Gospel Cross-Currents” and it makes its way through a mix of fifties country gospel of Fern Jones and Bonnie Owens and some recent country releases of Marty Stuart and His Fabulous Superlatives with folk, bluegrass and black gospel of the early century. Hello Operator

Long before we were graced with the voices of SAM, Siri, or Alexa, and before we could carry our smart devices around like a wallet or clutch…there were the women and men who served us from behind the receiver: the telephone operator. Maybe they didn’t have the answer to everything but they could connect us to about anyone anywhere in the world. But it usually cost more than we were willing to admit. This week’s Deeper Roots show takes on the theme of the telephone operator, the long distance connector, and the person with a soul…and usually a quick hangup if there were not enough coins to drop in the pay phone. It was the penalty for human interaction I guess. We’ll let Jorma, Johnny Otis, Wanda Jackson, and Eddie Floyd take us on a trip back to rotary dials and party lines in this week’s episode, live from the Santa Rosa studios at KOWS.

We had so much fun with our first installment a few months back that we thought it was worth a second installment…well, that and the depth and breadth of the American Songbag certainly lends itself to doing so. It doesn’t hurt either that it fits our deeper roots sensibilities so well. This installment finds us meandering about those classic songs whose topics include mellow blues ballads, hobo songs, Mexican border songs (how appropriate), tarnished love tales, and the ‘road to heaven’. Helping us through our sets we’ll be featuring an interesting collection of performers: Dave Van Ronk, Dock Boggs, Rosanne Cash, and Peter Case. The music of Albert E. Brumley resides in a shadowy corner of country gospel, but when it’s given the light of day, the glow is blinding. He was a shape note music composer and publisher whose southern gospel pieces are familiar to many. There’s not a lot of information about Albert but the musical legacy of his “I’ll Fly Away”, “Rank Strangers”, and “Turn Your Radio On” are masterpieces of the genre made popular by everyone from The Carters to Bill Monroe and Aretha Franklin to Alan Jackson and Kanye West. We’ll spend time with his music today, sharing numerous interpretations for you on a Friday morning in Sebastopol, live from KOWS studio at the UMC in the heart of town.

The Arhoolie Label

There are a handful of record labels that subscribe to the ‘deeper roots’ dogma. And our show tries to cover all of them. But East Bay’s own Arhoolie, whose catalog was recently acquired by Smithsonian Folkways is a very special example, maybe the premiere example, of what it means to dig deeper. Founded in 1960 by Chris Strachwitz, a German transplant who moved to the States in 1947, Arhoolie was founded on the principle that the best music could be found by traveling the backroads. And that is precisely how it got started, with a recording device in his trunk and an ear for the sublime. Lies and Liars

A notorious theme in our world today. But it’s not like there is a thin line between truth and lies in the end. The line is clearly defined and yet people would rather imagine anything but what is clearly painted before them. Our show today looks at what the worst often looks like. Dirty lies, white lies, poison lies, and all of those falsehoods made in earnest or in self promotion. There are those who proudly wear the color of lies and hate to remind us that vigilance is more important now than ever. Call out the lies. This week, we look at it through the gospel lens with Sister Rosetta Tharpe, swim into the rock oldies pool with The Knickerbockers, swing soft and winsome country with Carl Smith and The Carters, and we’ll also bring in some contemporary sounds including tracks from Mavis Staples, David Olney, and Robert Ellis. I don’t know about you but I’m sick about what’s happening.

We’ve got another free form collection of sounds for a Friday in Sonoma County. The July heat has us moving a little slower as everything around us appears to move at breakneck speed. So the idea is to help us find our center and we do that with sounds from the islands with Joe Keawe and Arthur Lyman, soul from the heart by Solomon Burke and Betty Everett, and some tradition with a mix of Johnny Cash, Ry Cooder, and Bob Wills. Dylan & The Gospel

The argument has been made that Bob Dylan’s earliest music contained more prophetic prose than his deep dive into the Christian faith in Slow Train Coming. His pen had always leaned on the big story lines of Old and New Testaments but he went all out, much as he did in his ‘rock’ conversion, when he made the direct connection to matters of the soul that he would find in the Bible. This week’s show features the gospel songs of Bob Dylan, performed by gospel greats The Dixie Hummingbirds, The Fairfield Four, The Mighty Clouds of Joy, and so many others.
