The Great American Songbook

Something different this week. We’ll be reflecting on the Spring Issue of a magazine that cuts through the heart of what we love doing here on both Blue Moon Americana as well as Deeper Roots. There are a handful of publications that make the cut but No Depression magazine is truly special and the Spring 2021 issue is something to revel in. The writing, the artists, and the arc of ‘The Great American Songbook’, from Stephen Foster to Louis Armstrong is given thoughtful and insightful treatment. Our show this week puts a soundtrack with a century of America’s music explored: Dock Boggs’ Pretty Polly, George Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue, The Blue Sky Boys’ cover of Knoxville Girl, and some incredible Latin vocals from one Omara Portuondo. The magazine is worth the read and the music is worth a listen. Tune in on a Saturday among the Sonoma County skies for the best of community radio.

Lead Belly’s Legacy

Deeper Roots goes deeper this Friday morning. We’ll be sharing the songs of tradition and folk blues from an artist who opened up a world to a generation of followers in the 1940s and 1950s. With the witting arm of Alan Lomax as his promoter and benefactor, Huddie Ledbetter’s music would get wings and find its place in America’s traditional music lexicon. This week’s show, like last week’s Bill Monroe special, revisits the music that he was identified with, much of which he is credited with bringing into this world, or at least opening our eyes to. We’ll hear from Doug Sahm, Red Smiley, Odetta, The Weavers, Bob Dylan, and many others on a show that celebrates a giant of America’s songbook. The performers include those from all walks: Ray Charles, Elvis, Doc Watson, Bruce Hornsby, and a collection of bluegrass favorites including Jim & Jessie McReynods, Ricky Skaggs, The Seldom Scene and a couple dozen others; all of them covering Bill Monroe’s music with some loyal to the arrangements while others putting their own spin on it. The Itinerant Life

The Great Depression brought to the forefront the blight of runaway capitalism and a country that was not prepared to put safeguards in place for working people, let alone the working poor, until FDR’s New Deal in the 30s. By then it was too late for the many itinerant homeless and impoverished migrant workers who moved from town to town by any means necessary, looking for hope amongst communities of those equally disenfranchised. The itinerant life brought about its own language, hieroglyphics, and rule of law. Our show today rides the rails with the music; songs of the itinerant life. We’ll hear from the likely suspects like Woody and Cisco, Doc Watson, Jimmie Rodgers, and Harry Choates as well as the Goose State Ramblers’ story of Ole Olson, Norman and Nancy Blake’s tale of Hobo Bill, Montana Slim, and Bob Dylan. We’ve waited four years so there’s no need for any more hopes, prayers, or incantations. Our way of American life is on the line. The choice is ours. As our image says: “Vote as you please, but please vote.” We’re kicking off the five day countdown with a collection of music featuring political songs, songs about voting, democracy, freedom, and civil rights; ; all of which are currently threatened by this administration and its sycophants, traitors, and rats. We’ll hear from Steve Goodman, Sweet Honey in the Rock, Bob Dylan, The New Christy Minstrels, and (of course) Roy Zimmerman, all of whom touch on one or more of our topics of the day. We’ve got free speech, no bull radio here in Sonoma County and Deeper Roots will take this Friday out to use a bullhorn to ask that you go out and vote, for heaven’s (and democracy’s) sake. We need to turn this ship around and this is our best opportunity.

Six months later…’nuff said, right? Deeper Roots finally gets around to the theme of pandemic protection by staying at home until things stabilize. We were all put out when it looked like six weeks and here we are talking months, not weeks. Patience and commitment. Something we have to work on. But we’ve got music to comfort us. Our heritage is rich with an incredible catalog of works; from country classics to the raw country blues, soul from Motor City and the Eastern Seaboard, jazz from New Orleans and KC, and everything in between. Just look (or listen) back. This week’s Deeper Roots features songs about keeping safe in shelter with fresh sounds from the digital bins. Warren Zevon, Jim Reeves, Wynonie Harris, The Alphabetical Four, Kitty Wells, and Buddy Miller will be featured. No need to put on your helmets (or tin foil hats) or to duck and cover. Today’s Deeper Roots show explores the Document label once more but, this time, we’ll be asking Gary and Gillian to tell us more. They’ll share some personal anecdotes about what brought them to their life’s work. So many of us from the baby boomer generation discovered early roots music through covers by bands from our early years that led us to recurring moments of musical revelation. And many of us found ourselves digging, rummaging, exploring, collecting, and listening for those mother lodes of musical treasures that surfaced like bits of gold on that river of time that runs from ‘then’ to the ‘now’. It’s the second part of our interview with this delightful couple from across the pond. Hear their stories of connecting with this music and how it informed their life’s work with Document Records.

Fall of Empire

Authoritarianism right in our own backyard. What are the signs that we should concern ourselves with? Much has been revealed over the centuries of how power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely. While our so-called checks and balances lay down in fear in the face of fascism and the childish fear of being made fun of by the playground bully, the innocents are called terrorists and the terrorists, patriots. Up is down and down is up, right? Music’s been made of the human condition over time and there’s also been books and countless political speeches…and we’re going to take our time today to share the music and speak of the ballot box which is our only weapon, it seems, in a democracy. When cowards and sycophants led by the GOP and Fox News pretend patriotism, we know we’re in trouble and we know that the hard rain is falling. Federal troops are attacking mothers, veterans, and peaceful protesters with impunity and there are no checks. There is no balance. As songwriter R. B. Morris observes, that’s how every empire falls…and you can tune in for inspiration as the August march on Washington is just around the corner.
