Guitar Routes

It’s a deep dive we’re taking today into the digital dustbin of the past century with the focus being on fretwork, string bending, bottlenecks and tripping the lap steel fantastic.  That’s right…a collection of fascinating tonal embellishments that cross the genres of country, jazz, blues, folk and pop. Our show this morning will feature some Lonnie Johnson, Les Paul, Chet Atkins, John Fahey, Grady Martin and a few others. It’s a trip with a few well knowns but more not so much  and you’ll just have to make room in your day because the sounds can’t be ignored. We’ll hear standards like Guitar Rag, Riders in the Sky, Black Mountain Rag, Indiana March, and a special playlist highlighting the work of Grady Martin in both country and rock.  We’re once again hoping for the best as October and November approach.

Country Boogie Woogie

While the origin of the term is in debate, there are numerous stories that almost make sense but cannot be verified. However, 20th century blues, country and rock and roll were rife with the reference and it turned into a guitar lick, a piano run, and a salty reference on the standup. Deeper Roots will be spending time with the country versions, inherited (nee appropriated) from the rhythm and blues form … and a little bit of history as well. We’ve got the classic country sounds of Sheb Wooley, Johnny Tyler, and The Delmore Brothers paired up with higher octane country Americana from Dale Watson, Robert Gordon, and Asleep at the Wheel. Chuck Berry once said “It used to be called boogie-woogie, it used to be called blues, used to be called rhythm & blues…it’s called rock now”. You can quote me in enlightening that observation by calling it “one nascent stream that emptied into a swift river.” Tune in Friday evenings here on Sonoma County Community Radio.

Lefty Merle Willie Hank & Hank

It’s a songwriter’s showcase this morning on Deeper Roots. Country music songwriters Lefty Frizell, Merle Haggard, Willie Nelson, Hank Cochran, and Hank Williams are highlighted in a show that features covers by their contemporaries (and a few from the recent past) including Iris DeMent, Ernest Tubb, Billy Walker, Bob Dylan, Rosanne Cash, and at least two dozen others. Our show pays tribute to some amazing stalwarts who literally defined the country ‘voice’ and story. Join Dave Stroud on another Friday morning on KOWS Community Radio, 92.5 FM Occidental, streaming to all of planet earth on all your favorite services including OpenRadio.app, TuneIn.com, RadioGarden.io and, our web site, kowsfm.com. The River In Music

There are no more essential metaphors to be had in the American story than that of the river. The river is nature’s alliance with mankind and its muse in prose, poetry and song. It is the stuff of dreams, the movement of the clock in Her terms, the news of the day when the banks are breached, and the symbol of biblical ventures of time and home. So we’ll be taking to the river on a Friday in July to feel the warmth of the surface knowing full well that the undercurrent is treacherous and cold beneath the hull. Music this week includes the stories of the Great Flood of 1927 with Barbecue Bob, the baptismal elements from Alison Krauss and Irma Thomas, Central Valley memories from Dave Alvin by way of Merle Haggard, and the poetry of river sounding chants and Paul Robeson’s muscle. Tune in as we drift our way down the Mississippi and beyond on Friday morning on Deeper Roots.

Music From The Band

Americana fusion from the Canadian border to the rolling hills of Arkansas: roots music from a musical collective built on a foundation made up of many different legs: blues, rock, folk, Civil War stories, burnished antiques found alongside the two-lane highways of mid-century and tradition from the kitchen. Their songs were anchored by deeper roots. There are few that could speak musically to all of these and all of their connecting tissue, but The Band (Robbie Robertson, Rick Danko, Levon Helm, Richard Manuel and Garth Hudson) made it seem easy. From their early years as The Hawks backing Ronnie Hawkins to being the electric behind Bob Dylan’s Judas performance in the UK, and then The Last Waltz. There were tragedies both light and heavy that foretold a demise as predictable as the appearance of Halley’s Comet. Join us in a reflection of their music on a Friday morning in Sonoma County on KOWS Community Radio.

Bob at 80

Bob Dylan’s turning the big eight-ohhh my God! Born on May 24, 1941 “with a name that means nothing and an age that means less”, he’s being honored in Minnesota (given his boyhood home of Hibbing) with a year long celebration. But it won’t be just the state whose motto from the French translates to “The star of the North”, but a good part of world will also be taking part. While prickly and, at times, difficult to translate, his words have formed images from the metrics of gospel, protest, and a cynic’s wrath to sonnet-like love songs and dirges that would bend even the ears of T. S. Eliot or Auden. He is the bard of a generation whose metal art and endeavors in the art of whiskey underscore eight decades that spell a true renaissance man. We’ll touch on two hours of Dylan’s music this week on Deeper Roots.

Mother’s Day Special

This weekend we observe Mother’s Day, a day that got buried among the many lost celebrations last year due to the pandemic. So it is only fitting that we elevate the gratitude we have this coming Sunday. At Deeper Roots, we’re taking time this Friday to celebrate with only the finest in the many American genres including country, bluegrass, rock, pop vocals, soul, and everything in between…with a little bit of spark thrown in. We’ve got Aretha, The Louvins, Zydeco sounds with Fernest Arceneaux, JJ Cale and Dr. Hook, all in tow to pay tribute to all of those moms out there who play such a big part in our formation as adults. Tune in Friday mornings live from the KOWS studios in the Cherry Street Historic District of Santa Rosa, Sonoma County, California.

Honey Don’t

Don’t tell me…it’s theme time but with the negative bent. No, no, no, honey don’t. This week’s show takes on songs of which there is no reduced supply chain: songs that ask us ‘not to’. A somewhat obscure theme, no question, but it’s all about the message after all. We’ll hear a variety of genres this week, all with their warnings prefaced with the contraction “don’t”. We’ll hear from Elvis (a favorite of the idiom), Blue Lu Barker, Julia Lee, Charles Brown, Buddy Emmons, and those representing doo wop, country, early rock, and Americana. All of this coming your way on our first show of May 2021, a rebroadcast of a KOWS show recorded live from the KOWS studios, located in the Cherry Street Historic District of Santa Rosa. Don’t get defensive, it’s all in fun.
