Guitar Theme

Once considered in its earliest forms a noble instrument, the history of the guitar can be traced back over forty centuries (yes, that’s 4000 years). While we won’t got back quite so far in our exploration, we will explore the popular form of this instrument in song this week. We’re not going after the genius as much as we go after the topic with songs whose theme is that of the guitar. It seems that there has always been a personal connection between the instrument and the player, sometimes as a confidant and others as a foil. Our show will feature yodeling guitars, lonely guitars, Bo’s guitar, long-legged pickers, amigos, and a number of performances about ‘one’s first guitar’. Join Dave Stroud for plenty in a guitar themed journey.

There She Goes – KOWS 12/16/15

There She Goes
There She Goes

West County has seen it’s first consistent (and consecutive) days of rain and boy did we need it. El Nino looks to be making some waves. We’ll be making some waves this week on our Wednesday night foray into the past century of America’s music. We’ll hear new music from the Oxford American Georgia music issue, as well as a good share of early country, some Stephen Foster (by the Hamilton County Ramblers), and some Jelly Roll Morton. There will be a few local performers to sweeten the mix: Kevin Russell, Carl Hendel & Eddie Meisse, and an alumni of Montgomery High School in Santa Rosa…Dan Hicks. Tune in for music that keeps on giving.

Let’s Live – KOWS Nov 5, 2015

Let's Live
Let’s Live

We’ll be bringing another eclectic blend of music from the past for an evening set kicks off with sounds of New Orleans beginning with a medley from the Bayou Maharajah, James Booker and closing with Irma Thomas. In addition to our usual run of bluegrass, jazz, and blues…we’ll prepare some piping hot biscuits from the country shack with Alan Lomax, Flatt & Scruggs, Pappy O’Daniel and the Hillbilly Boys, and Kacey Musgraves. There will also be a rare piece of early blues piano work from Ollie Shepard and the early century jazz band sounds of Enric Madriguera, Jimmie Lunceford, and Fletcher Henderson. Two full hours of Deeper Roots on weekday evening…carrying us over the midweek hump so that it’s all downhill from there…

Wild Men and Wild Women

Wild Men and Wild Women
Wild Men and Wild Women

It’s theme time once again and we’re going to find ourselves among the wild and crazy men as well as the wild, woolly women. Round town girls celebrate, burning that candle, and Keely Smith will jump, jive, and wail with Louis Prima. Red Ingle and His Natural Seven will join the Sons of the Pioneers in spreading the word about ‘cigareets, whuskey, and wild, wild women”. Mae West, Julia Lee, Ernie Ford, and Jerry Lee Lewis will keep the party going and Deeper Roots will keep the lights on ’till 11pm sharp (that’s Pacific Time, of course). Join Dave Stroud for another two hours of a century of America’s music on KWTF, 88.1 FM, community radio for Bodega Bay.

Hillbilly Fever

Hillbilly Fever
Hillbilly Fever

The sound was simple, fun, and certainly influential. It evolved from ancestral celebrations…finding its groove by the mid 1930s and playing itself out as a popular voice well through the early days of what was termed the Golden Age of Country Music, the 1950s. The entertainment industry collectively shunned the hillbilly term by the mid-50s, choosing the more sedate “Country and Western” moniker and certainly the even more narcoleptic sound of Nashvile going into the coming decade and beyond. Hillbilly music lives today only as splinter and special edge-case Americana. Listen and find out.

Back to Bakersfield

Back To Bakersfield
Back To Bakersfield

Deeper Roots heads down the long hot stretch of 99 to California’s Central Valley to visit the country sound that blew in from every direction…starting with the Dust Bowl. Bakersfield was a first step, a way station, for migrant workers coming into California to escape hard times in the Midwest; their treatment by the small minds of fearful communities being little different than those migrants we think of today. “In the years following World War II, Bakersfield had plentiful honky-tonks including the soon-to-be-famous Blackboard Cafe. People drank, danced, and even fought to Western swing music.” The sound of Nashville began to become watered down, losing its appeal to some who thought it had lost a reverence for the heart and soul of working class Country. We’ll hear from Buck Owens, Merle Haggard, Wynn Stewart, Tommy Collins, and Billy Mize and tip our cap to a great book on the subject of the Bakersfield sound and the history of Country Music: Workin’ Man Blues written by local author and Central Valley native, Gerald Haslam.

Generations of youth over the last century grew up with the images of cowpokes, rustlers, bad guys, and ranching through dime novels, radio, television and, of course, the music. In this episode of Deeper Roots, we focus on the legacy of the ‘cowboy crooners’ and country balladeers who sang about life on the trail alongside the grub wagon on the lone prairie where the imagination could take you anywhere it pleased…and often did. We’ll hear the earliest ‘cowboy songs’ by Vernon Dalhart and Carl Sprague; and we’ll also find ourselves being serenaded (quite gently) by Tex Ritter and Gene Autry who reached out for the generic, mass appeal. The music was full of tradition as well and we’ll hear some contemporary reflections from David Wilkie And Cowboy Celtic, Jim Lauderdale, and (of course) Waylon, Willie, Merle, and Johnny.
