Twist & Shout

A little bit of twisting and a little bit of shouting…as well as some gospel rhythms, hand clapping, and some back beat rhythms from the gulf and whole lot more. This week’s show will be a free form extravaganza which means there’s a bright day ahead, as always. My springboard was an afternoon’s listen to the music of David Lindley who, in addition to being a fine musician, he had extraordinary taste in music. We’ll hear some gospel tracks from Sister Marie Knight and the Reverend James Cleveland, classic funk and soul from The Temptations, Billy Butler and The Isleys. We’ll also spinning up some Wild Tchoupitoulas, Otis Rush and be featuring some three-time track samples and a brand new track from the 30th anniversary release of John Prine’s Lost Dogs and Mixed Blessings, slated for release in early September. There’s a whole lot more to share with everyone out there so it’s a good morning to drop in and here a Twist and Shout sample from Top Note going back to 1961…oh yes, as well as a couple David Lindley tracks.

Get On Board

From a song about dirty little religions to a song about Joanie the Jehovah Witness Stripper, we’ll be going all out from up and down with genre celebrations from the past century where music reflects the inspiration from church on Sunday mornings following the barroom sinners of Saturday night. This week’s Deeper Roots takes a bit of a free form shuffle featuring Bo Diddley, The Ramones, Johnny Mercer, and a whole host of rhythm makers. Performances this morning will span some covers from Chris Smither, David Lindley and an answer song from Barbara Lewis. KOWS radio wants to thank all of you who came out to the Comedy fundraiser at Barrel Proof Lounge last week. It was a great success for us and also a validation of community radio here in the North Bay. KOWS is free form, free speech, no bull community radio; just the kind of thing we need in a country gone mad with lies, deceit and hate. There is always hope. Tune into your radio voice, any time of the day or night. We’ll always welcome you.

The Rise of Soul Music

Soul music’s roots come from the urbanization and commercialization of rhythm and blues in the late fifties and early sixties. Young black musicians, often nurtured in black churches, enjoyed and listened to R&B sounds and began a fusion of R&B, blues and gospel that would later take on the moniker “soul music”. The term “soul” had been used in African American culture, particularly among musicians, to emphasize the feelings of power, spirit and creativity found in its culture. Regional acts and labels took this genre into different directions that included, among other things, vocal interplay, gospel rhythms and themes that were translated from the sacred to the secular, all with mix heavy on standard rock or brass rhythm sections. The blend and variety brought out the contrasting tones of grit and pop-infused sounds. From Sam Cooke to James Brown and Etta James to Brenda Holloway…we’ll take a journey through the rise of soul music.

Celebrating Smokey

The songs of Smokey Robinson have stood the test of time, remaining popular and relevant across generations. His compositions have been covered by artists from various genres, further cementing a legend as one of the greatest songwriters of his era. This week, we take a walk through a handful of the many classics he gave us, spanning three decades, focusing primarily on the Motown song machine classics from The Marvelettes, Marvin Gaye, The Temptations, Mary Wells, and, of course, his own group The Miracles. There is no question that his songwriting style and lyrical finesse have influenced generations of musicians and, coupled with his ability to blend heartfelt lyrics with catchy melodies, standards were set for songwriters in the R&B and soul genres; not to mention the groundswell of the sixties sound of Berry Gordy’s Motown Records. A morning of pure soul and pop that will include some sweet contemporary covers (if we can squeeze them in).

More Eccentric Soul

We revisit the Numero Groups incredible catalog of rare and obscure soul recordings from the 1960s and 1970s called “Eccentric Soul”. This series is a meticulous curation and exercise in unearthing hidden gems in the soul music landscape from old record collections, master tapes, and archives to discover unreleased or overlooked tracks by artists who may not have gained widespread recognition during their time. What sets the “Eccentric Soul” series apart is its emphasis on bringing attention to regional and independent soul labels that operated on a smaller scale, often producing music reflecting the unique local music cultures of their time. Our show digs into a number of releases that showcase a diverse array of sounds, styles, and voices, offering listeners a glimpse into this rich tapestry of American soul music, honoring the best of the day with all the rough edges you’d expect (and desire) with a sincerity of artistry and bald-face emotion. Bring on the soul here on Sonoma County Community Radio.

Mix Master’s Delight

An eclectic free form blend of sounds featuring a variety highlighted by Memphis Minnie, T-Bone Burnett, The Rascals, The Miracles and Carole King…plus over a dozen others in our last show of summer 2023. As the walls of justice close in on traitors and seditionists, we lean on the hope that the constitutional provision  that prevents their ilk from ever holding office is the key to saving democracy. Politics aside, the music this week features songs about baking biscuits, diamonds, shopping around, head spinning and what it’s like living here in the U.S.A. Friday morning’s Deeper Roots is a blend of classic and deep tracks designed to set the table for the weekend, right here on Community Radio for West Sonoma County and the world. Tune in, turn on but don’t, just don’t, drop out.

Soul Divas

The sound of both longing and empowerment surfaces in this morning’s Deeper Roots show as we take the wayback machine to the 1960s for some of the very best in female soul. With every female vocalist, group-based or solo, that surfaced from the Motown stable there were dozens upon dozens of hopefuls lined up by other labels and producers. We’ve visited many of them in past shows but there are always more to share and some memorable performances that can get easily overlooked in the crowded field. And while we’ve heard a number of these performers in past shows: Betty Everett, Mary Wells, and Carla Thomas…there are also the unknowns who deserve attention. We’ll spend some more time with Mitty Collier, Dee Dee Warwick and Etta James and find some other names to pay attention to including Odessa Harris, Helene Smith, and Delilah Keenebruew. Tune in Friday morning at 9 Pacific for some deep tracks and favorites from a few of those 60s soul divas.

Country Rhythm & Blues

We’ll be covering the covers once more this week but this time we’ll be burrowing into a cross section of genres to get to the heart of the matter. It’s country songs with rhythm & blues interpretations, all from the decades of the fifties and sixties. We’ll hear from a few familiars rhythm rockers including The Coasters, Fats Domino, King Curtis and Ruth Brown as they take on the very best of country and tradition with a style all their own. But there’s also the surprises and unknowns like Thin Man Watts, Piney Brown, and The Ray-o-Vacs to fill out the show this morning. From Jambalaya to Tumbling Tumbleweeds, we’ve got some fine soul and R&B interpretations for you. Tune in and find out.
