We’ll be sharing some under-the-radar sounds from some of the greats and some of the ‘never-heards’. Doo wop’s heyday was clearly brief, running from the early urban street corner sounds of the early 1950s to the more commercially viable and polished sounds of the early 1960s. The decade of the fifties found the sounds of rhythm and blues being best represented on the Atlantic Records label. Founded in 1947 by Ahmet Ertegun and Herb Abramson, the catalog of artists and the quality of production were unparalleled for their time. And while Ertegun’s biography is subtitled “The House That Ertegun Built”, the performers were also undisputed heavyweights: Big Joe Turner, Ray Charles, Clyde McPhatter, and Lavern Baker to name a few. Things, however, exploded when a lady dubbed “Miss Rhythm” arrived with “Mama, He Treats Your Daughter Mean” leading to another moniker: “The House That Ruth Built”. This week’s show will feature some of the great tracks from Ruth Brown and the many contemporaries who made the label synonymous with R&B well into the seventies and beyond. The year 1948 saw the price of a first class stamp at three cents and unemployment in post-war America was at a low 3.9%. The Hollywood Ten were jailed for contempt of Congress when they refused to disclose Communist affiliations. And Columbia Records introduced the 33 1/3 LP at New York’s Waldorf-Astoria Hotel. The LP is still the standard by which physical listening is measured with album sales booming, with LPs sold rising 108% in the first six months of 2020. But we’re going to be sharing the music of 1948 this week: Eddy Arnold, Peggy Lee, Dick Haymes, Louis Jordan, Blue Lu Barker and Mahalia Jackson are just but a few we’ll be hearing from in this week’s episode on KOWS Community Radio.

You’ll be entertained by the likes of Tony Casanova, Sparkle Moore, Little Carolyn Sue, and Wild Bill and the Blue Denims…a forgotten list of lost culture that will take you down a rabbit hole that you hope might never end…or maybe just the opposite. This week’s show celebrates the Godmother of rock ‘n roll who was finally paid tribute with her 2018 induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Sister Rosetta Tharpe’s sanctified electric guitar work not only touched on the cusp of soul and blues, but it foretold what was to come less than a decade later. There were the R&B bands, which she would dabble in (much to the chagrin of her followers), that would also have an impact…but it was her sound that influenced and inspired Elvis, Wanda Jackson, Jerry Lee Lewis, and so many others, even to this day. We’ll take a deep dive into the music and story of this legend including some of those who she would draw her own inspirations from. Tune in.
