Dave Bartholomew Tribute

Dave Bartholomew passed away in June at the age of 100. You may not know his name, but he was one of the architects of a sound that would become rock n’ roll. A New Orleans fixture he was a band leader, trumpet player, arranger, producer, and songwriter whose keen ear and direction led him to become A&R man for Imperial Records where he met Fats Domino. His songwriting and arrangements can be heard on “Blueberry Hill”, “Ain’t That a Shame”, “Lawdy Miss Clawdy”, and hundreds more. Early rock has the signature of Dave Bartholomew just as the music of New Orleans would become identified with the expansiveness of jazz and rhythm & blues. We’ll hear early influences and early productions of Dave’s, prior to his collaborations with Fats Domino. And, as always, so much more.

We revisit the blues with some pairings of old and new. Join Dave Stroud for a selection of classic delta, Chicago, and folk blues from the likes of Robert Wilkins, Elmore James, Magic Slim, and Bukka White. The original classics pair up with updated versions from contemporaries like Sonny Landreth, Jeff Beck, The Allman Brothers, and Rory Block. Blues is the big muddy and the the tributaries flow through vast expanses of cleansing and clarifying. But, unlike those wide rivers like the Mississippi, the tributaries explode into new, deeper channels in the heart of the American landscape.

We’re going to count down the top ten of the year 1954…in pop, country, and R&B. Nothing special about that year, just a random pick; but it was the year that Marilyn Monroe married Joltin’ Joe D. It was the year the Army-McCarthy hearings convened. The words “under God” were added to the Pledge of Allegiance. It was also a year of firsts: That’s Alright, Mama, Elvis’ first big hit, was released on Sun Records, the first Burger King opened, and the first transistor radio was developed and announced by high-tech’s Texas Instruments. The DOW Jones average closed at an all-time high of (a whopping) 382.74. Tune in for the countdown. 65 years in the rear-view on Sonoma County Community Radio.

If that’s not enough, we’ll share some Killer, Albert Ammons, and Creedence. We’ve got a wild mix this week…sounds from the rock n’ roll archives, all done while excavating deeper into the halls of R&B, rockabilly, and country. Don’t count on the usual suspects, although there will be a few attending, but look to the under-the-radar floor pounders. The performances mostly qualify for shouts, shakes, and rocking fool’s gold, including some hillbilly ranters, New Orleans panters, and country banters. Tune in for some obscure Eddie Cochran alongside sounds from Jimmy Dee & The Offbeats, Sax Kari & His Ballin’ Blues Band, Royce Porter with The Kounts, and the Brewster Avenue Rhythm Boys. Deeper Roots shares a rare mix of sounds including jug band sounds from Jim Kweskin, a new track from Maria Muldaur, The Ink Spots, Gal Holiday, and Pee Wee Crayton…oh what a mix. Dave hosts a unique blend of sounds each Friday morning and he’ll be setting aside a playlist or two that scratches the surface of the Burnette clan including Johnny, Dorsey, Billy and Rocky including a wrap up of some tracks from the great Bay Area-based Solid Smoke reissue from the early 80s of the Rock n’ Roll Trio. Well, it might be a bit of a stretch, and it might have been a bit of a fad, but it also flavored the beverage. Mambo. A lively mix born of a Latin dance of Cuban descent in the 30s and introduced by Perez Prado to an American audience in the 40s. It found it’s way into the popular music culture from big band to jazz and R&B. This week’s show samples some of the performances that were totally infected by its rhythm. We’ll hear from Mickey Baker, Wynonie Harris, and Tiny Grimes on the R&B side as well as the bandleaders who brassed it up including Perez Prado, Desi Arnaz, and Xavier Cugat.
