It had to start somewhere. And it did. The music that inspired rock and roll also inspired the countless British Invasion groups that littered the charts beginning in the early-to-mid 60s. Mayall, The Yardbirds, and, of course, The Rolling Stones. The early years of the Stones found them playing covers of some of the great stateside R&B, blues, and soul classics. Our Deeper Roots show today feasts on the originals (as did Jagger, Richard and company) and brings you the seminal sounds of Chuck Berry, Muddy Waters, Solomon Burke, Arthur Alexander, and a host of others in our tribute to the music that was a fusion of blues, R&B, and soul. One way to lounge about in the summer heat is to go directly at it with songs that complement the temperature from different angles (and genres). Tune in Saturday afternoon for a fresh look as Dave sits in for Steady Eddie once more with some rockabilly with Jimmy Simmons and Billy Lee Riley, hot country biscuits from Asleep at the Wheel and Al Dexter, hot soul stew from James Brown and Major Lance, and some humid yet playful pieces from Fats Waller and Lee Press-on & The Nails. We’ll also be taking a drone flight above some Mason-Dixon Line tradition from the very distant past with the Old South Quartette (featuring Polk Miller), and Victoria Spivey and Don Flemons. It’s summer and the heat will be with us for some weeks; too hot to handle? Too darn hot? Too hot for (fill in the blank)? Dave Bartholomew Tribute

Dave Bartholomew passed away in June at the age of 100. You may not know his name, but he was one of the architects of a sound that would become rock n’ roll. A New Orleans fixture he was a band leader, trumpet player, arranger, producer, and songwriter whose keen ear and direction led him to become A&R man for Imperial Records where he met Fats Domino. His songwriting and arrangements can be heard on “Blueberry Hill”, “Ain’t That a Shame”, “Lawdy Miss Clawdy”, and hundreds more. Early rock has the signature of Dave Bartholomew just as the music of New Orleans would become identified with the expansiveness of jazz and rhythm & blues. We’ll hear early influences and early productions of Dave’s, prior to his collaborations with Fats Domino. And, as always, so much more.

We revisit the blues with some pairings of old and new. Join Dave Stroud for a selection of classic delta, Chicago, and folk blues from the likes of Robert Wilkins, Elmore James, Magic Slim, and Bukka White. The original classics pair up with updated versions from contemporaries like Sonny Landreth, Jeff Beck, The Allman Brothers, and Rory Block. Blues is the big muddy and the the tributaries flow through vast expanses of cleansing and clarifying. But, unlike those wide rivers like the Mississippi, the tributaries explode into new, deeper channels in the heart of the American landscape.

Leon Redbone Tribute

“The only thing that interests me is history – reviewing the past and making something out of it”. A man after our own heart here at Deeper Roots, shining bright like that old harvest moon. We lost Leon this past week and his family lovingly announced his passing with the following prose deserving of the mysterious Mr. Redbone: “It is with heavy hearts we announce that early this morning, May 30th 2019, Leon Redbone crossed the delta for that beautiful shore at the age of 127. He departed our world with his guitar, his trusty companion Rover, and a simple tip of his hat. He’s interested to see what Blind Blake, Emmett, and Jelly Roll have been up to in his absence.” We’ll take some time to honor the music that so inspired this delightful entertainer who elevated the blues, early century pop, and country into a form that extracted the joy of life and bottled like fine wine over the past 40 years. We’ll even reach into the Redbone bins for a handful of delightful covers. A simple tip of our hat to Leon as he crosses to the other shore…

We’re going to count down the top ten of the year 1954…in pop, country, and R&B. Nothing special about that year, just a random pick; but it was the year that Marilyn Monroe married Joltin’ Joe D. It was the year the Army-McCarthy hearings convened. The words “under God” were added to the Pledge of Allegiance. It was also a year of firsts: That’s Alright, Mama, Elvis’ first big hit, was released on Sun Records, the first Burger King opened, and the first transistor radio was developed and announced by high-tech’s Texas Instruments.
