Love Bug Boogie

Love is in the air. And so is some foot-tappin’ rhythm on a Friday in our shelter-in-place here in Sonoma County. The genuine stuff brought to you by the supporters and underwriters of Community Radio here in the county. Tune in for a blast of soul and rhythm and blues in the key of love with Etta James, Ella Johnson, Julia Lee, Jackie Wilson, The Flairs, and the great Barbara Lynn. Our social distancing matters even though our first desire is to be close with each other. If we can’t have it first or second hand, then will take it third hand. So why not tune into some third hand roots sounds, all with the honest theme of love: sugar coated love, the miracle of love, and makin’ love. You can tune us in Friday evenings on 92.3 FM in Sonoma County or streaming to the world at krjf.org.

Holland Dozier Holland

Deeper Roots explores the motor city soul sounds of Motown, paying our respects to the incredible songwriting team who defined the Hitsville, USA sound in the mid-sixties: brothers Eddie and Brian Holland, along with Lamont Dozier. The goods were delivered. The brassy, bass-driven rhythm and targeted stories of the heart stand alongside virtually any songwriting team of the century. Fact: this songwriting team wrote ten of the twelve #1 songs of The Supremes and were an institution alongside the music of The Funk Brothers. We’ll hear from Martha & The Vandellas, The Four Tops, Marvin Gaye, and a host of others this Friday morning while we’re tucked into our homes, waiting out the storm. Tune in and add a little bit of soul to your day.

Big Weekend

If we can’t party in person, why not make it a virtual one. Join Dave Stroud for some community radio shenanigans on Friday mornings on KOWS (or Friday evenings on KWTF) as he celebrates a century of America’s music. This week’s another free form romp with a vibrant (and sometimes raucous) collection of sounds. He’s got songs about weekends, the quest for love, the middle child, and moving on with NRBQ, k.d. lang, Daniel Romano, Bobby Moore, and The Jive Five…all for you. From mid-century classic country to sixties R&B and soul to honker and some classic Richard Berry.

International Women’s Day ’20

Blues, folk, and plenty of tradition. Songs that celebrate sisters in a fight for equal rights. That’s right. This is still part of the conversation in the 21st century. The right to vote. The right to equal pay. And the right to choose. There is still exclusivity beyond measure and yet gender equality is still a topic, not a reality. This week’s show stands up for International Women’s Day, held this past Sunday, March 8th, around the world. Deeper Roots digs deep for soul from Aretha, Nina, and Betty Wright, blues from Lucille Bogan  and Bessie Smith, and fresh sounds from Amy Rigby, TLC, and the Secret Sisters on a Friday morning in Sonoma County. Join us.  #EachforEqual #IWD2020.

Candy

Yes, there’s a theme this week and it’s about as sweet a theme as you’ll hear on Deeper Roots. It’s not surprising there’s a wealth of content to choose from given that it is one of the favorite attention- getters, no matter your age. Candy. Sweets. Whether that’s a nickel, a penny, or a quarter a dose. Our favorites from the convenience aisle near the cash register, there to lure you. This week’s show is not for the glucose intolerant as we walk the convenience aisle of 20th century pop, rhythm & blues, country, jazz, and vocal group odes to the sugar in all things, sweet and small, short and tall, and sticky with the syrup-sweet. We’ll hear from The Strangeloves, Elvis, Lee Dorsey, Eddie Holland, Red Foley, and Barbie Gaye in our exploration of the sugar rush.

Rare Female Soul

From the deeper bins of the sixties and seventies…heartbreak, cheating, and all the soul from the ladies perspective. Some powerful divas deliver the goods in this week’s episode of Deeper Roots. The songs you’ll hear were those on the chart bubble, some local, some national, but all worth a revisit. If you’ve heard more than a handful of these deep soul tracks, we’d be surprised. Join Dave Stroud as this week he’ll be sharing the sounds of Tammy Montgomery, Wendy Rene, Mitty Collier, Geraldine Hunt, and some names you’ll know including Irma Thomas, Mary Wells, and Etta James. Tune in on a Friday morning in Sonoma County for the best soul you’ve never heard.

Travelin’ Blues

This week’s episode of Deeper Roots focuses on gospel, blues, and tradition with a theme being the “travelin’ blues”. Whether that’s a long ride to perdition or salvation on the King’s highway or a ready roll down the road apiece…our journey will avoid the toll roads, whether they be the sacred or the profane. Performances this morning feature Rory Block, Chris Smither, Eric Clapton, Freddie King, and The Golden Gate Quartet. The show is a ‘first installment’ of traveling songs…songs about the highways…told in the key of blues with the followup in coming months being one that focuses on the country and bluegrass sound. But not today. Today’s about the blues and the gospel. Drop by.

Stay on the Gospel Side

We’ll be taking a bit of a traditional free form exploration of gospel, blues, soul, and country, pairing up The Blind Boys of Alabama with James Carr and Bobby “Blue” Bland for a soul stew of the day. The fun doesn’t stop there; in face, it just gets started and we’ll be reaching into the dusty country bins for some Roy Rogers and the Sons of the Pioneers. And new sounds: a benefit piece, a cover of Tom Petty’s For Real performed by Willie Nelson and the Family…right alongside a new track from The James Hunter Six. Friday evenings on KWTF pushes the roots envelope every week. Join Dave Stroud at 9 Pacific.

Rock Island to James Alley

From the rail yard to back alleys of the urban south to St. James Infirmary, we explore that short life of trouble blending populist, folk, blues, and songs of the west. And we’ll hear contrasting sounds of new and old; stories of Gypsy Davie, Black Jack David, and hard gospel truths from the likes of Josh White, The Meat Purveyors, The Carters, Merrill Moore and Blind Willie Johnson. Deeper Roots’ first show of 2020 will inject the clarity of folk blues with traditional songs performed by contemporary artists alongside early century classics. Tune in every Friday morning at 9 on KOWS Community Radio for Deeper Roots. Streaming at kowsfm.com/listen.
