Got Blues If You Want It

It’s blues time once more. We’re in for a hard winter and before we roll out the Christmas cheer and jingles, it’s time for some deeper reflection. This week’s Deeper Roots show features music from the great blues performers, acoustic and electric, of the past century: Lightnin’ Hopkins, Howlin’ Wolf, Slim Harpo, Elmore James, Ray Charles, and a large contingent of the usual suspects. We make our way from Highway 51 to 49, the waterfront to the crossroads, buzzin’, shufflin’, walkin’ blues…all for you this week on KRJF community radio here in Sonoma County. Let your conscience be your guide.

Discovering Document Records

Today’s Deeper Roots show explores the Document label once more but, this time, we’ll be asking Gary and Gillian to tell us more. They’ll share some personal anecdotes about what brought them to their life’s work. So many of us from the baby boomer generation discovered early roots music through covers by bands from our early years that led us to recurring moments of musical revelation. And many of us found ourselves digging, rummaging, exploring, collecting, and listening for those mother lodes of musical treasures that surfaced like bits of gold on that river of time that runs from ‘then’ to the ‘now’. It’s the second part of our interview with this delightful couple from across the pond. Hear their stories of connecting with this music and how it informed their life’s work with Document Records.

Travelin’ Blues

This week’s episode of Deeper Roots focuses on gospel, blues, and tradition with a theme being the “travelin’ blues”. Whether that’s a long ride to perdition or salvation on the King’s highway or a ready roll down the road apiece…our journey will avoid the toll roads, whether they be the sacred or the profane. Performances this morning feature Rory Block, Chris Smither, Eric Clapton, Freddie King, and The Golden Gate Quartet. The show is a ‘first installment’ of traveling songs…songs about the highways…told in the key of blues with the followup in coming months being one that focuses on the country and bluegrass sound. But not today. Today’s about the blues and the gospel. Drop by.

Rock Island to James Alley

From the rail yard to back alleys of the urban south to St. James Infirmary, we explore that short life of trouble blending populist, folk, blues, and songs of the west. And we’ll hear contrasting sounds of new and old; stories of Gypsy Davie, Black Jack David, and hard gospel truths from the likes of Josh White, The Meat Purveyors, The Carters, Merrill Moore and Blind Willie Johnson. Deeper Roots’ first show of 2020 will inject the clarity of folk blues with traditional songs performed by contemporary artists alongside early century classics. Tune in every Friday morning at 9 on KOWS Community Radio for Deeper Roots. Streaming at kowsfm.com/listen.

Blues is a Woman

This week’s show dedicates two hours to the incredible blues women of the past century. We’ll be going deep, featuring tracks from the great early century trailblazers:  Mamie Smith, Trixie Smith, Ma Rainey, Sippie Wallace, and others. Plus, we’ll hear from Ruthie Foster, Big Mama Thornton, Dinah Washington, and Varetta Dillard; all of this being the background to to last Saturday evening’s Blues is a Woman performance at the Raven Theater in downtown Healdsburg. Our special guest on the show will be Pamela Rose, performer, author, and vocalist, who has toured nationally with her critically acclaimed show Wild Women of Song: Great Gal Composers of the Jazz Era. Pamela is part of the San Francisco ensemble Blues is a Woman along with Pat Wilder, Ruth Davies, Kristen Strom, Shani Johnson, Jennifer Jolly, and music director/pianist/vocalist Tammy Hall. Dave Stroud will be talking the ‘pearls’ of the blues with Pamela in a prerecorded interview. Join us.

Deeper Memphis Minnie

Well, it’s about time. For being one of the premier blues women of the 20th century, we’ve been remiss in our coverage here on Deeper Roots. You can, however, check out our blog post Memphis Minnie on the Ice Box to prepare you for the music we’ve got for you this coming Friday.  Not only will we share some classic tunes from Minnie and Kansas City Joe McCoy but we’ll be pairing much of them with contemporary covers including some special ones: the Alabama Shakes, Maria Muldaur, Precious Bryant, and Eilen Jewell (just to name a few). The article mentioned above is a well worn first hand observation of a Memphis Minnie performance published in the Chicago Defender in 1942, written by Langston Hughes. We’ve got enough to fill the room…and the airwaves, this coming Friday morning so here’s hoping you can drop in.

Back to Back Blues

We revisit the blues with some pairings of old and new.  Join Dave Stroud for a selection of classic delta, Chicago, and folk blues from the likes of Robert Wilkins, Elmore James, Magic Slim, and Bukka White. The original classics pair up with updated versions from contemporaries like Sonny Landreth, Jeff Beck, The Allman Brothers, and Rory Block. Blues is the big muddy and the the tributaries flow through vast expanses of cleansing and clarifying. But, unlike those wide rivers like the Mississippi, the tributaries explode into new, deeper channels in the heart of the American landscape.

Leon Redbone Tribute

“The only thing that interests me is history – reviewing the past and making something out of it”. A man after our own heart here at Deeper Roots, shining bright like that old harvest moon. We lost Leon this past week and his family lovingly announced his passing  with the following prose deserving of the mysterious Mr. Redbone: “It is with heavy hearts we announce that early this morning, May 30th 2019, Leon Redbone crossed the delta for that beautiful shore at the age of 127. He departed our world with his guitar, his trusty companion Rover, and a simple tip of his hat. He’s interested to see what Blind Blake, Emmett, and Jelly Roll have been up to in his absence.” We’ll take some time to honor the music that so inspired this delightful entertainer who elevated the blues, early century pop, and country into a form that extracted the joy of life and bottled like fine wine over the past 40 years. We’ll even reach into the Redbone bins for a handful of delightful covers. A simple tip of our hat to Leon as he crosses to the other shore…

Time’s Getting Hard

Music this week that speaks to hard times. From the Dust Bowl and Great Depression to personal hardships, we’ll share some bluegrass sounds, tunes steeped in tradition, soothing notes of country gospel, and folk blues. We’ll hear from The Weavers, Mavis Staples, Bobby Bare, and Pearly “Grandma” Davis (a nugget from Mike Seeger’s Old Time Music series). There will be talk of failing crops, revolution, and Oklahoma dust this week. Deeper Roots goes a little bit deeper with more songs about hard times this week on KOWS Community Radio, broadcasting live from the Cherry Street Historic District of Santa Rosa, California, where our neighbors just experienced their own hard times from flood waters. Thinking about them.

Deeper Charley Patton

This week we’ll explore the music of the legendary Charley Patton. We’ll be dipping our toes into the birth of the Delta blues featuring some classic tracks from the gravel-voiced masked wonder as well as some rich covers from contemporary performers. Listen in for music from Otis Taylor, David Johansen, Corey Harris, and Taj Mahal…just to drop a few names. We’ll also scratch the surface of Charley’s career including some reflections from a master’s thesis written by none other than the American musicologist and musician, John Fahey. Tune in Friday morning as we board ourselves a raft to roll down the waters in search of the rich and elusive legend of the Mississippi Delta blues that was Charley Patton.
