The Year in Pop – 1932

We look back…even though we weren’t there. Our show this week will celebrate the American songbook and popular music in the darkest of times: the year 1932. The clouds were only starting to clear in the heart of the Great Depression and the music was hopeful, sometimes saccharine, and the songwriting talent abundant. The performances were not bad either. The Mills Brothers, Bing Crosby, The Boswell Sisters, Cab Calloway, Mildred Bailey, and many others contributed. Tune in on our morning look at the popular sounds of 1932.

While the show this week is free form (something we like to do every few weeks), we’ll be leaning on a number of ‘connections’ including a couple of sets that feature tracks from the 1950 classic country album “Beyond The Sunset” which was released by Luke The Drifter aka Hank Williams, Sr. We’ll hear interpretations and originals that keep the focus on the country gospel solemnities that made this album one of country’s most interesting albums of the time.  We’ll also be rocking with The Prisonaires, Aretha Franklin; riding down the canyon with Gene Autry and Jonathan Edwards; and connecting with boot kicking pieces from Robert Gordon and Elvis. An interesting and fun two hours is in store for you on West County community radio. Join Dave Stroud for selections from the last 100 years.

Deeper Fats Waller

Deeper Fats Waller
Deeper Fats Waller

In his brief life of 39 years, Tom Waller (better known as ‘Fats’) took what he learned from the church organ and broke the bonds of sacred for the swinging sounds that he would learn from Willie “The Lion” Smith, James P. Johnson, and Eubie Blake. While the organ (or, as he liked to call it “The God Box”) was his first love, it was his songwriting and ebullient personality that would infuse his melodies that set him apart. The American Songbook chapter called “Joy” is full of his music and the tragedy of losing him too soon to his demons likely prevented us being further enriched. Tune in for two hours of music that inspired Fats as well as the music he gave us.

Pop Music of the 1920s

Pop Music of the 1920s
Pop Music of the 1920s

We’ll revisit the third decade of the 20th century where the social and cultural watershed events following the first World War were more than one could have anticipated. The Jazz Age; Prohibition; Radio and the Victrola meant entertainment could be had in the front room, replacing the family and neighborhood parlor entertainment. While the Great Depression loomed on the horizon, the music that found the middle was hopeful and full of man-meets-girl songs were all the rage…even if signs of hard times to come were easily spotted. Listen in for a chronological selection that includes the sounds of Duke Ellington, Paul Whiteman, Annette Hanshaw, Ethel Waters, and the peerless pop icons Al Jolson and Eddie Cantor.

Roots of Doo Wop

Roots of Doo Wop
Roots of Doo Wop

The early fifties brought the dawn of a musical form that became popular with a younger crowd although it was simply a version of a vocal harmony form born in the early century, if not long before. The street corner harmonies were a big hit as this new form of rhythm called ‘doo-wop’ saturated the top 40 R&B (and mainstream) airwaves. But the influences themselves had huge followings. We’ll hear from some of the early gospel inspirations like the Heavenly Gospel Singers as well as the vocal groups who were dominant in the form’s lineage: The Ink Spots, The Mills Brothers, and The Ravens. We’ll also hear from the groups who introduced ‘doo wop’ as we know it in the early fifties.
