Sagebrush Sweethearts

When we say roots, we mean roots. This week on Deeper Roots we’ll kick off Women’s History Month by paying tribute to the many female performers from early country, the Golden Age, and well into our latest century. Influential, talented, and more than many of the opposite sex, not afraid to make a political statement now and then. We’ll also be sharing some recent Americana ‘cowboy sweethearts’ with songs that are both winsome and traditional. Tune in to Community Radio for Sonoma County as we go back to the 30s with the Girls of The Golden West, Patsy Montana, and The Tune Wranglers. We’ve also got some favorites from Margo Smith, Dale Evans, Rose Maddox and Dolly Parton to share with you.

Dallas Frazier Tribute

We lost one of the great country songwriters last week. You know his songs, no doubt, but it’s not likely you know his name. Dallas Frazier grew up with songsmithing in his blood. And he got around: the Bakersfield scene, penning a bit hit for The Hollywood Argyles and The Oak Ridge Boys, Portland, Los Angeles, Capitol Records and, of course, Nashville. He penned music for the likes of Elvis, Ferlin Husky, Connie Smith, George Jones, Charley Pride and dozens of others with a blending and re-imagining the kind of music he’d always been fond of: music of the early 20th century. Join us as we share the songs of Dallas Frazier and tell you a little bit about him in our next show here on Sonoma County Community Radio.

Sugar Moon

We’ll be settling into some classic country sounds from the golden age alongside some contemporary sounds that stay steadfast in a sound that rings true and authentic. We’ll hear some classics from Wynn Stewart, Buck Owens, Waylon Jennings, Webb Pierce and others. There will be plenty of original sounds from BR5-49 and Chuck Mead, k.d. lang, Don Edwards, and The Mavericks to remind us of the clear line between authentic and what’s attempting to pass for country these days. Tune in for a mix of swing, story songs, love songs, and foot-tappin’ treasures on Deeper Roots this week on Sonoma County Community radio where the music will always take you somewhere other than the main stream. We seldom venture there.

Country Boogie Woogie

While the origin of the term is in debate, there are numerous stories that almost make sense but cannot be verified. However, 20th century blues, country and rock and roll were rife with the reference and it turned into a guitar lick, a piano run, and a salty reference on the standup. Deeper Roots will be spending time with the country versions, inherited (nee appropriated) from the rhythm and blues form … and a little bit of history as well. We’ve got the classic country sounds of Sheb Wooley, Johnny Tyler, and The Delmore Brothers paired up with higher octane country Americana from Dale Watson, Robert Gordon, and Asleep at the Wheel. Chuck Berry once said “It used to be called boogie-woogie, it used to be called blues, used to be called rhythm & blues…it’s called rock now”. You can quote me in enlightening that observation by calling it “one nascent stream that emptied into a swift river.” Tune in Friday evenings here on Sonoma County Community Radio.

Willie & Friends

Willie Nelson turns 88 this month. Born during the Great Depression and raised by his grandparents, he wrote his first song at the age of seven and had his first band at the age of ten. From high school to the Air Force, then to his return home to Texas as a radio disc jockey, he was always in a band singing. In the 1950s he would write songs that would become country standards and we’ll be sharing some of them with you in today’s Deeper Roots, performed by Willie and his contemporaries. He endures just as his music does and the catalog is a legacy few parallel. We’ll hear from The Little Willies, Waylon Jennings, Faron Young, Asleep at the Wheel, and at least a dozen others performing the songs of Willie Hugh Nelson. Tune in Friday morning on KOWS.

Mr. Songwriter – Harlan Howard

We’ll be honoring the songwriting prowess of Harlan Howard this week on Deeper Roots. A country songwriter and performer whose career spanned six decades and wrote some of the classic songs of the Golden Age, turning formula into phrasing and stories of true life as he saw it. After a few minor successes, his song Pick Me Up on Your Way Down became a No. 2 hit for Charlie Walker in 1958 and Heartaches by the Number for Ray Price the following year, his name appeared at the forefront of songwriting talent of the time. His songs were performed by everyone from Merle Haggard to The Kingston Trio and Johnny Cash and Ray Charles. This week’s show will feature songs written by Harlan Howard and we’ll get to hear him perform many of his own. He  coined the oft-quoted phrase “Three chords and the truth”. Tune in for the festivities.

Shelter In Place

Six months later…’nuff said, right? Deeper Roots finally gets around to the theme of pandemic protection by staying at home until things stabilize. We were all put out when it looked like six weeks and here we are talking months, not weeks. Patience and commitment. Something we have to work on. But we’ve got music to comfort us. Our heritage is rich with an incredible catalog of works; from country classics to the raw country blues, soul from Motor City and the Eastern Seaboard, jazz from New Orleans and KC, and everything in between. Just look (or listen) back. This week’s Deeper Roots features songs about keeping safe in shelter with fresh sounds from the digital bins. Warren Zevon, Jim Reeves, Wynonie Harris, The Alphabetical Four, Kitty Wells, and Buddy Miller will be featured. No need to put on your helmets (or tin foil hats) or to duck and cover. But you might want to get out the vote!

While the Cheetoh-in-chief comes up with hateful and pitiful distraction after distraction in an attempt to have us take our eyes off of failure after profound failure of his…we celebrate the folks in gray and blue who not only bring us the bills but also the packages, ballots, and cheer from friends and relatives. That little white truck is more than an institution: it is part of our collective heritage and a constant that should be cherished. It’s been celebrated in music from every corner over the past century and we’re scouring those dusty digital bins for country, blues, rock, and rhythm that are burnished with the colors of the letter carrier in word and rhyme. Tune in for everyone from Roy Rogers to Memphis Slim, Smiley Lewis, and Tiny  Bradshaw this week. Sonoma County Community Radio goes deep on another pandemic Friday morning.

Ya Got Trouble

We’re going the free form route today, celebrating an eclectic blend of gospel with the likes of Clara Ward and Patsy Cline, country greats from The Sons of the Pioneers and Skeets McDonald, doo wop street corner ballads from The Sheppards and The Royals, and vocals from Nat King Cole, Ethel Waters, and John Hiatt. Oh, in addition to a few choice show tunes, we’ll touch on topics of tears, loneliness, great speckled birds, and a visit to Treasure Island with Satchmo. Quarantine offers time for reflection but it also offers time for enjoying the sounds of deeper tracks. And that’s what you get day in and day out on Community Radio for Sonoma County. Join us.
