We’ll be bringing another eclectic blend of music from the past for an evening set kicks off with sounds of New Orleans beginning with a medley from the Bayou Maharajah, James Booker and closing with Irma Thomas. In addition to our usual run of bluegrass, jazz, and blues…we’ll prepare some piping hot biscuits from the country shack with Alan Lomax, Flatt & Scruggs, Pappy O’Daniel and the Hillbilly Boys, and Kacey Musgraves. There will also be a rare piece of early blues piano work from Ollie Shepard and the early century jazz band sounds of Enric Madriguera, Jimmie Lunceford, and Fletcher Henderson. Two full hours of Deeper Roots on weekday evening…carrying us over the midweek hump so that it’s all downhill from there…

In The Gloaming – KOWS Oct 24, 2015
Our Saturday morning show opens with some caffeine-driven music…literally… songs about the magic bean, that morning beverage that starts the day for some of us. We’ve got swamp pop from Randy & The Rockets, some jumpin’ jive from Cab Calloway, twilight reflections from Jonatha Brooke and The Sons of The Pioneers, and some Chet Atkins, David Lindley, and Eilen Jewell. KOWS community radio studios will be moving before the end of the year to a very central West County location that will bring us in closer contact with our listeners…and our Deeper Roots. And some exciting news! Deeper Roots moves to weekly broadcasts on KOWS.
Wild Men and Wild Women
It’s theme time once again and we’re going to find ourselves among the wild and crazy men as well as the wild, woolly women. Round town girls celebrate, burning that candle, and Keely Smith will jump, jive, and wail with Louis Prima. Red Ingle and His Natural Seven will join the Sons of the Pioneers in spreading the word about ‘cigareets, whuskey, and wild, wild women”. Mae West, Julia Lee, Ernie Ford, and Jerry Lee Lewis will keep the party going and Deeper Roots will keep the lights on ’till 11pm sharp (that’s Pacific Time, of course). Join Dave Stroud for another two hours of a century of America’s music on KWTF, 88.1 FM, community radio for Bodega Bay.
High Noon
It’s a new morning…as it always is…and was when we celebrated another Saturday morning in Occidental with Deeper Roots Radio: A Century of America’s Music with host Dave Stroud. This twice-monthly show opens with a mule kicking in the stall, some barnyard rhythm and then moves swiftly into a blend of 1950s country and big band. Ray Charles, Frankie Laine, Chick Webb, Otis Spann, and Merle Travis are just a sampling of performers we’ll hear from. West County living deserves roots music wafting over the airwaves on a Saturday morning in early autumn. Let’s set the airwaves stage with some Otis Spann.
Songs About Doctors
We go to the theme well once more on Deeper Roots, this time with music that explores the tincture of hadacol, the sick bed blues, the boogie woogie flu, measles, whooping cough, and snake oil…all in a show full of the very best of music about being sick in bed and sending for the doctor from the last century of big band, jazz, country, blues, and rock.
Songs of the Century – Misses
Join us on our second of two episodes exploring the Top 30 songs of the 20th century as it is so suggested by the Record Industry Association of America (RIAA)…this time, however, Dave Stroud suggests 30 that he believes were worthy of the list but which either a) did not make the list or was b) buried further down the larger list of 365. The fun continues. Last week we discovered that “Over the Rainbow” was #1 and that “Rhapsody in Blue” was nowhere to be found on the larger list. This week we get payback and find songs like “Blue Moon of Kentucky”, “Rocket 88″, and “West End Blues” our own list. Our list too is not without controversy.
San Antone – KOWS August 10, 2015
We’re filling in once more for Mark Hogan and his Bluegrass and Old Time Hour. This week, we’ve put together another two hours of music that spans close to a full century…including Cliff Edwards from 1933, Woody Guthrie, Jimmie Lunceford, and Dave Van Ronk (just to name a few). There will be some themes and schemes built into our sets this evening including the story of Caldonia, the Texas town of San Antone, and heading down a dusty road of a century of America’s music.
Songs of the Century
The Record Industry Association of America (RIAA) produced a list a few years back that they called the “Songs of The Century”. It was concocted based on a questionable set of sampling and was to represent and “promote a better understanding of America’s musical and cultural heritage.” The voting pool was a strange mixture elected officials, school students and teachers, as well as industry professionals. The respondent pool was about 200. The list is woefully inadequate but certainly worth discussing. Deeper Roots will spend this week exploring the top 30 (of 365) and follow up with its own list in a second episode next week. Listen in as we stretch the imagination.
Grapes on the Vine
Raising the roof once more on KOWS in West Sonoma County on a bright Saturday morning. And we make it count with an opening salvo of some country swing from Bob Wills, W. Lee O’Daniel, The Light Crust Doughboys, and Willie Nelson. Not to be outdone, we’ve got bluegrass from The Rice Brothers and our own David Thom, gospel from the Hummingbirds, and a special set celebrating the “Poet of the Blues” Percy Mayfield. We’ll also feature blues from Texas and, if we find the time, early century pop from Frank Crumit and Cliff Edwards. Tune in Saturday morning at 9 on KOWS for a dose of roots sounds from the past century of America’s music with Dave Stroud.
Fair and Warmer – KOWS May 23, 2015
The show kicks off with some mid-century country fiddlin’ courtesy of Curly Fox but makes a quick left turn with a set about liars, tattlers, and some straight-forward testifying from Sister Rosetta Tharpe. We’ll also be entertained with some classic roots from the Dallas String Band, Lead Belly, E. C. Ball, and a tribute set to Sam Cooke.
