From sunrise to sunset and then back. This Friday morning we take a journey on the roller coaster of life on the big blue marble using music as our rails. We’ll rise and shine in the cold grey light before dawn and follow summer rain with the summer wind as sundown approaches. This week’s theme is a fusion of sunrise, sundown and a misty moonlight rhapsody featuring the music of Ray Charles, Norah Jones, Chet and Les, Bobby Bare, Mahalia Jackson and a couple dozen others. We’ll take you from dawn to midnight as we bring on the best of America’s music from digital, vinyl and ethereal dustbins of the past 100 years. Join us once more for music from long ago, today, and far away here on Sonoma County Community Radio.

Music comes in all shapes and sizes. There are always the also-rans, the one hit wonders, the bright little shiny piece that gets lost among the thousands of others of the same mint, the ones that couldn’t afford to compete, as well as all the B-sides and album leftovers. We’re picking a few of those and a couple dozen others that we found as we ‘walked the beach’ in search of the perfect playlist to share this morning. Tune in for a sweet mix of just about everything featuring David Seville, Scatman Crothers, Lou Monte, Neil Young, Esquivel, and Johnny Cash as we lay out a brimming sea of sound like so much flotsam and jetsam on the Sonoma County airwaves this morning. Tune in for an earful and more.
We enter December with hope. Join us for some sounds from the French Quarter and its environs. This Friday on Deeper Roots, tune in for a sweeping celebration taking the St. Charles trolley in time from Kid Ory and Louis Armstrong to the sounds of Tuba Fats, Mac Rebennack, Allen Toussaint and beyond. We’ll also find some Big Easy rocking treats by the water: Ernie K-Doe, Sugar Boy Crawford, Fats Domino, and Larry Darnell are also on the board from the Big Easy as well as sounds of piano pounders like Archibald, Champion Jack Dupree and Professor Longhair. KOWS radio’s antenna is moving so we highly recommend that you stream us on the KOWS web site (or via the KOWS app) because the FM signal will be out of commission as the transmitter has found a new home out in the hills above Bodega Highway.

It’s a deep dive we’re taking today into the digital dustbin of the past century with the focus being on fretwork, string bending, bottlenecks and tripping the lap steel fantastic. That’s right…a collection of fascinating tonal embellishments that cross the genres of country, jazz, blues, folk and pop. Our show this morning will feature some Lonnie Johnson, Les Paul, Chet Atkins, John Fahey, Grady Martin and a few others. It’s a trip with a few well knowns but more not so much and you’ll just have to make room in your day because the sounds can’t be ignored. We’ll hear standards like Guitar Rag, Riders in the Sky, Black Mountain Rag, Indiana March, and a special playlist highlighting the work of Grady Martin in both country and rock. We’re once again hoping for the best as October and November approach.

Not exactly sure what ‘groove juice’ is, but for the purposes of our show full of sass and novelty, we’ll just suggest you make it what you want it. It’s a whimsical, sometimes bawdy, morning collection of the past 100 years of jazz, folk, country, and pop (with a little who-knows-what-that-is thrown in). We’ve got poodles, big feet, Ovaltine, four leaf clovers, rabbits, and tattoos included with the subject matter today. Songs that are as delectable as they are incredible. We’ve got Skeets McDonald, Robert Crumb, Mae West, Groucho Marx, Dorothy Shay (the Park Avenue Hillbilly), and a couple dozen others for your Friday morning. Oh yeah, and some Johnny Cash and Slim Gaillard as well. So tune into KRJF Community Radio this week for all you can handle.

It’s one of the novelty topics but that’s only whistling in the graveyard now, isn’t it? An episode of vipers and wild nights backstage, a reflection of the party atmosphere and the debauchery that would often take place after long nights of performing and jiving. We’ll also touch on the devil’s weed, as it was once known before the recognition of Victorian sensibilities was ejected in favor of common sense. The music will include primarily blues and jazz but we’ll also dip into some later novelty sounds to keep us all honest with the topics of coke, opium, marijuana, and pills on the agenda. Sweet bath house sounds from Bette Midler, wistful sounds from Phil Lawrence and Dan Hicks take center stage alongside the music of The Cats & The Fiddle, Fats Waller, Barney Bigard, and Cab Calloway. Quite a lineup and quite a topic surrounded by junkies, reefers, hadacol concoctions, and mellow stuff…so we hope you’ll drop by on a Friday morning in Sonoma County.

Quaint, sweet, nostalgic…just a few adjectives to describe today’s music. Digging into the digital bins we’ve surfaced some of the more familiar of tunes from the last century. Early century pop, country, jazz and vocal harmonies all being serenades with upbeat and good natured favorites of the Great American Songbook. We’ll hear from Fats Waller, Eddie Condon, Ted Lewis, the Sons of the Pioneers, and Blind Blake with songs that ring a true bell in the heart. Songs about lazy rivers, love letters, the lovesick blues, and Kentucky moon. Don’t let yourself get carried away as you lean in closer to the speakers. We certainly don’t want you to hurt yourself. KOWS Community radio is a connection worth making with an eclectic blend of sounds from up and down the genre expanses…streaming to planet Earth at http://www.FreeSpeechNoBull.com. Join us.

Somewhere sandwiched between pre-war big band and swing and the rock n’ roll era that erupted in the early fifties, there was foretelling in the sounds of post-war rhythm and blues, honkers and shouters, and jump bands. This week’s show will explore the sounds of post-war with Louis Jordan’s Tympany Five, Bull Moose Jackson, Babs Gonzales, Wynonie Harris, Amos Milburn and a couple dozen others. To say the burner was hot is misunderstanding the situation: it was red hot. Our morning show will have your toes tappin’, your fingers snappin’, and your hips shakin’ as the sounds of post-war rhythm in blues takes you into another Spring day here in Sonoma County. Join in the fun!

Don’t tell me…it’s theme time but with the negative bent. No, no, no, honey don’t. This week’s show takes on songs of which there is no reduced supply chain: songs that ask us ‘not to’. A somewhat obscure theme, no question, but it’s all about the message after all. We’ll hear a variety of genres this week, all with their warnings prefaced with the contraction “don’t”. We’ll hear from Elvis (a favorite of the idiom), Blue Lu Barker, Julia Lee, Charles Brown, Buddy Emmons, and those representing doo wop, country, early rock, and Americana. All of this coming your way on our first show of May 2021, a rebroadcast of a KOWS show recorded live from the KOWS studios, located in the Cherry Street Historic District of Santa Rosa. Don’t get defensive, it’s all in fun.
