Americana Covers 2019

There have been some great Americana sounds released this year and there is no sense in ignoring them, certainly. In fact, you can tune into Sonoma County Community Radio each week for Blue Moon Americana, broadcasting Thursday mornings at 5am on KOWS and 9am on KWTF. We’ll be spending some time covering the covers of tradition and some from the contemporary well this week on Deeper Roots. Tune in for some great sounds…truly. Fun covers of blues, gospel, folk, country, and jazz from the likes of Whitehorse, Jesse Dayton, Steve Earle, Willie Nelson and Kristi Jean & Her Ne’er-Do-Wells. We’ll hear everything from Amazing Grace to Redneck Friend this week on Deeper Roots. Check it out this Saturday evening,  a rebroadcast of a live show from the KOWS Cherry Street Historic District in Santa Rosa.

Gospel Crosscurrents

Another gospel celebration, this time with a mix of country, bluegrass, classic black gospel, and a very special blending from the annals of rock n’ roll. We’re calling this roots celebration “Gospel Cross-Currents” and it makes its way through a mix of fifties country gospel of Fern Jones and Bonnie Owens and some recent country releases of Marty Stuart and His Fabulous Superlatives with folk, bluegrass and black gospel of the early century. Tune in for Mac Wiseman, Mahalia Jackson, Elvis, the Alphabetical Four, and Sister Lottie Peavy. Deeper Roots celebrates each Friday morning on KOWS and Friday evening on KWTF.

Brothers in Harmony

Harmony. That blend of knowing how the instruments and vocals will reverberate against each other…and the Delmore Brothers introduced the tightest of harmonies combining the early sentiments of gospel, folk, and blues, becoming, in their time, the most popular act on the Grand Ole Opry. The Louvin Brothers were blessed with not only pure complementing vocal chops but an innate sense of timing. Others, like the Osbornes, the Stanleys, and the Monroes took the Appalachian folk sound of what would become bluegrass to another level, using their kinship as a vault that would surpass others whose symbiotic relationships would often lack the requisite DNA (not to mention timing). Deeper Roots explores a number of performers who leveraged that DNA to set themselves apart from others on the stage. It’s sibling country harmony this week on Sonoma County Community Radio. Join in the fun!

Country Christmas 2018

It’s a holly, jolly, country Christmas on a Friday morning in West County. We’ll put our political blinders on this morning in search of the merriment that ’tis the season on Deeper Roots. This year’s Christmas special is a collection of country sounds, both new and old, that takes us down a path that mixes contemporary Americana, bluegrass, rockabilly, and classic country into a finely tuned blend of holiday cheer. We’ll be cooking from the Texas panhandle with Dale Watson, taking the high lonesome yule train with Jimmy Martin, spinning yarns with Johnny and Tommy Cash, and dropping by the Waffle House with Bill Anderson. Tune in knowing full well that the dinner’s in the oven and the stockings are all hung by the chimney with care. Merry Christmas to you and yours!

Music of Albert E. Brumley Sr.

The music of Albert E. Brumley resides in a shadowy corner of country gospel, but when it’s given the light of day, the glow is blinding.  He was a shape note music composer and publisher whose southern gospel pieces are familiar to many. There’s not a lot of information about Albert but the musical legacy of his “I’ll Fly Away”, “Rank Strangers”, and “Turn Your Radio On” are masterpieces of the genre made popular by everyone from The Carters to Bill Monroe and Aretha Franklin to Alan Jackson and Kanye West.  We’ll spend time with his music today, sharing numerous interpretations for you on a Friday morning in Sebastopol, live from KOWS studio at the UMC in the heart of town.

California’s Burning

We are remembering what happened here in Sonoma County last October when the firestorm hit, devastating communities and lives. Over 5000 homes and dozens of lives were lost. Disaster struck overnight and our music today reflects back with songs of disaster, songs of burning hell, and music that reminds us that Mother Nature will have its way. Blues from John Lee Hooker and Howlin’ Wolf, traditional country gospel from Bill Neely and Kitty Wells, and more in a Friday evening remembrance.

Highway to Heaven

The first of two gospel Friday mornings coming up on Deeper Roots in June. This week, we’ll follow a ‘heavenly’ theme. The Christian vision of afterlife’s reward is expressed in music on a Friday morning in West County (of all places). There will be country and black gospel sounds emanating from the UMC in downtown Sebastopol on KOWS radio as we share performances about heaven including the electric voices of Marion Williams and Marie Knight; the rocking celebration of the good book from Sister Rosetta and Brother Claude Ely; and country gospel enlightenment from Willie and Bobbie Nelson. This one is worth the wait and worth it’s weight in heavenly gold. Tune in!

Through the Bluegrass

Springtime sounds from classic corners this week. Now, we all know that real bluegrass is green but, like the music’s own origins which are steeped in gospel, blues, and tradition, we overlook the formalities and accept the generalities’.  This week’s Deeper Roots will take a journey with the greats (Ralph Stanley, Ricky Skaggs, and The Monroe Brothers to name a few) while also tipping our hats to the new-grass sounds of David Thom, Sam Bush, Tony Furtado, and Caleb Klauder & Reeb Willms. We offer different takes outside the lines including some Charlie Haden and Brennen Leigh. A Friday morning celebration of the old home place and the little white church where traditional rings … coming to you from Bodega Bay: KWTF Community Radio.

Ships Upon the Sea

A wayfaring lot…music that touches on seafaring tragedies, punctuated by the loss of that most famous of them all: the HMS Titanic. This week’s show will focus on music that commemorated the ships that were lost at sea; tragedies that were headlines around the world; songs of the seafaring life and the sailors and crew that were a part of it.  The stories are told in songs from the wells of tradition. We’ll hear from Frank Hutchison, Papa Harvey Hull, Pink Anderson, The Dillards and Dan Zanes. We’ll also hear some classic maritime music from the Smithsonian catalogs. Blues, country, folk, and so much more…all celebrating those ships upon the sea and the ones we lost along the way.

Dead Roots

While the lyrics and music of Robert Hunter took the Grateful Dead into remarkable directions, codifying their place among the bands of the latter half of the 20th century, by the time they reached their peak their roots were already firmly established. Their early music was clearly anchored in the sounds of tradition, reaching from the Appalachians to the Texas Gulf Coast. We’ll hear early (and contemporary) performances that inspired the band with songs of Blind Willie Johnson, Red Allen, The Mississippi Sheiks, Henry Thomas and Obray Ramsey. The landscape we’ll traverse includes blues, gospel, hillbilly, and folk…no Dead music, only music that served to inspire. This week on Sonoma County Community radio.
