Not Above The Law

Welcome to a common theme we share on Deeper Roots:  an eclectic blend of stories featuring grifters, the gallows, the law and prison time. Today we’ll be mixing current events with the rule of law and the focus takes on historic anthems of good versus evil. Playlists will feature topics of blind justice, the fate of liars and thieves, and stories of false prophets and demagogues. We’ll welcome them in their own words with pearls of justice that even the January 6th looters, traitors and thieves cannot escape. It’s a cult…and neither democracy nor faith abide much by the cult of personality that’s soiling our Constitution. We’ve got tracks from Dr. John, Three Dog Night, Hugh Laurie, Booker T and Ted Hawkins this week. Join us here on Deeper Roots for an expose about “Fear and Loathing at Mar-a-Lago”.

No Parking Here

The archivists went back to the well for the core of a show first broadcast seven years ago, polished it up some by adding some fresh musical paints to the themes, but left the vintage drapes and findings alone. And this week’s Deeper Roots show is all the better for it. Tune in on Friday morning for songs about the ‘love bug’, private property and trespassers, biblical tales from about fellows named John, and some musical musings about dog houses and ramblers. We’ve the likes of Ry Cooder, Moses Mason, Arthur Smith, The Drifters, and Sharon Jones to help you get your head straight for a weekend to kick off a long summer of our discontent. Your rights. Our rights. When they come for some today, who says they won’t come for you tomorrow.

Old Devil Time

In an encore episode from 2015, we listen in as Dave explores the multi-generational sounds of not only bluegrass with Dillard and Clark and The Hackberry Ramblers, but we’ll also cross the genres (as we are wont to do) with Cowboy Copas, Clara Ward, Otis Spann, and Doris Day. There’s a couple of different threads that run through the show today, one being that of the ‘devil’ and the other being of ‘new mornings’. Tune in at a special time and see what’s in store on a late-fall morning in West County. And please, donate to community radio:  kwtf.net.

Guitar Routes

It’s a deep dive we’re taking today into the digital dustbin of the past century with the focus being on fretwork, string bending, bottlenecks and tripping the lap steel fantastic.  That’s right…a collection of fascinating tonal embellishments that cross the genres of country, jazz, blues, folk and pop. Our show this morning will feature some Lonnie Johnson, Les Paul, Chet Atkins, John Fahey, Grady Martin and a few others. It’s a trip with a few well knowns but more not so much  and you’ll just have to make room in your day because the sounds can’t be ignored. We’ll hear standards like Guitar Rag, Riders in the Sky, Black Mountain Rag, Indiana March, and a special playlist highlighting the work of Grady Martin in both country and rock.  We’re once again hoping for the best as October and November approach.

The River In Music

There are no more essential metaphors to be had in the American story than that of the river. The river is nature’s alliance with mankind and its muse in prose, poetry and song. It is the stuff of dreams, the movement of the clock in Her terms, the news of the day when the banks are breached, and the symbol of biblical ventures of time and home. So we’ll be taking to the river on a Friday in July to feel the warmth of the surface knowing full well that the undercurrent is treacherous and cold beneath the hull. Music this week includes the stories of the Great Flood of 1927 with Barbecue Bob, the baptismal elements from Alison Krauss and Irma Thomas, Central Valley memories from Dave Alvin by way of Merle Haggard, and the poetry of river sounding chants and Paul Robeson’s muscle. Tune in as we drift our way down the Mississippi and beyond on Friday morning on Deeper Roots.

Blues Across Texas

A collection of blues performers almost unparalleled. They grow ’em big down there and the sound of the blues is no different. From Lead Belly to Blind Lemon Jefferson to the Vaughan Brothers, you can’t really capture the breadth and depth of the blues from the state of Texas in one sitting, so we’re only going to do our very best in the show this morning on KOWS. Early blues from Ramblin’ Thomas, Texas Alexander and Bessie Tucker will take us into the seminal country folk blues of Lightnin’ Hopkins and Mance Lipscomb. While we’re name-dropping, how about Bobby “Blue” Bland, T-Bone Walker, Johnny Winter, Albert Collins, Big Mama Thornton, and it doesn’t stop there. There’s a heaping helping of Texas blues coming your way from the KOWS studios located in downtown Santa Rosa.

Rolling Along

We’re going to blend all the favorites into a delicious free form stew this morning, looking to the north, south, east and west for our inspiration. Not only do we have some Otis Redding soul, but we’ve also got some traditional blendings from David Johansen, The Devil Makes Three, and some southern fried sounds from James Lee Stanley and John Hammond. A lot of our playlist makes connections: moonlight drives, Memphis tributes, and a lot about our title track ‘rolling along’. I’ve also got a little splash of Frankie Laine for inspiration along those lines. Tune in on a Sonoma County Friday morning for more from the Cherry Street Historic District and the mighty KOWS, streaming to planet earth on kowsfm.com.

Breakin’ The Law

Another theme time extravaganza for our listeners on this new Spring morning here in Sonoma County. The theme focuses on bad behavior, poor judgement and legal entanglements that find themselves into the American musical lexicon. Rock, country and blues seem to lean on the theme more than any other with the country stories of cheatin’, stealin’, and petulant pistols being the most common. We’ll be hearing from Johnny Cash, Porter Wagoner, Louis Jordan, Elvis,  The Cadillacs, and a number of others, sharing stories of everything from jaywalking to murder. Oh…and let’s not forget the lawyers. No lawyer jokes, though. Just a little bit of David Lindley, Kitty Wells, and Warren Zevon on visiting day behind the bars…which is every Friday morning at 9 on community radio for Sonoma County.

Lead Belly’s Legacy

Deeper Roots goes deeper this Friday morning. We’ll be sharing the songs of tradition and folk blues from an artist who opened up a world to a generation of followers in the 1940s and 1950s. With the witting arm of Alan Lomax as his promoter and benefactor, Huddie Ledbetter’s music would get wings and find its place in America’s traditional music lexicon. This week’s show, like last week’s Bill Monroe special, revisits the music that he was identified with, much of which he is credited with bringing into this world, or at least opening our eyes to. We’ll hear from Doug Sahm, Red Smiley, Odetta, The Weavers, Bob Dylan, and many others on a show that celebrates a giant of America’s songbook. Tune into KOWS radio every Friday morning at 9 Pacific for a new episode of a show that’s heading into it’s ninth year here on KOWS Community Radio.

Got Blues If You Want It

It’s blues time once more. We’re in for a hard winter and before we roll out the Christmas cheer and jingles, it’s time for some deeper reflection. This week’s Deeper Roots show features music from the great blues performers, acoustic and electric, of the past century: Lightnin’ Hopkins, Howlin’ Wolf, Slim Harpo, Elmore James, Ray Charles, and a large contingent of the usual suspects. We make our way from Highway 51 to 49, the waterfront to the crossroads, buzzin’, shufflin’, walkin’ blues…all for you this week on KRJF community radio here in Sonoma County. Let your conscience be your guide.
